This is an outdated, overtly biased book against white people. The majority of the references for the book are from the late 1980's to the mid-1990's. The social views of America have changed exponentially in the last 25-30 years, so while some of their opinions may have been relevant at the time of printing, they are irrelevant now. Here are a few example that don't even begin to scratch the surface of the racist views against whites found in this book. From the Preface (page xvii), the bias of the authors is clear - "Racism wreaks havoc in many lives - physically, economically, socially, and psychologically - while remaining virtually invisible to those with the privileges of whiteness."Page 69 - "As if white students did not already have enough advantages over students of color..."Page 81 - "The United States has not had a non-white (or female) president. Neither political party has nominated a person of color as its candidate for President or Vice President."Page 89 - "People of color have two advantages with race consciousness...people of color are more likely to be aware of racism and themselves...White people can move through the world believing that they are deracinated, that they are just people, or Americans, but with little core awareness of being white..."These are very broad statements against one race. Every other race mentioned in the book is discussed favorably. I have yet to find a favorable opinion of whites in the text.

Great Book!
This is a very well written, clear and well organized book on the many issues that affect the helping professions in relation to institutionalized racism. I am a graduate clinical social work student and this was one of my favorite books this year. It is not whine-y, it is well researched, and it was a fascinating and sometimes amazing read. It was great to read and become informed about racism while working with people from many different backgrounds. Even though I was very well versed in the subject beforehand, the way the book presented up to date research and ideas made it an unexpectedly great read.

Incredible and eye opening read.
Incredible and eye opening read. The book is very intense though. In purchased it for a social work class. They should come out with a shorter version for the general public so every citizen can be educated on the injustices that our current government hides, particularly because it only happens in poor communities.

I bought this book used and it had a tear on the outer cover. Also the pages were warped and this book is definitely interesting, but I don't fully agree with it. Take it with a grain of salt and test it out for yourself.

Defined by skin color, not character
The entire premise of this book is that if you are white, you are a racist, an oppressor, and that's just the way it is. Sorry, it doesn't matter what you believe or who you are or what your character is like. The color of your skin defines who you are, period, end of discussion. And, if you deny this to be true, it is proof that you are a racist oppressor, as if they needed more proof, since your skin is white and that was all the proof they needed to declare this to be so. Critical race theory? You know what? I have loads of "Critical" for this codswallop.

There is so much to say about this amazing book! I purchased it for a cultural competency course with MCU for my midwifery studies. It's a great book that teaches about white privilege, racism, and what professionals can do to work with a culturally diverse population.

Amazing book for all - not just those in the helping professions!
I was required to read this book for the MSW program I am in, but I wish I read it years ago - the information is current, relevant, easy to read and easy to relate to. Thank you Miller and Garren and please keep books like this coming our way!!

Great Resource!
This book is an amazing resource to have for anybody interested in thinking about or talking about race and racism, especially as people who are in positions of power in the helping professions. The concepts of the book are easy to understand and challenge every bit of how we think and live in our racialized world.
