An under-appreciated herb
Green shiso is a fantastic addition to any herb garden. It has a pleasant, subtle flavor (reminiscent of basil and mint, but milder) and it lends itself to multiple uses in the kitchen - it’s good added into salads, shredded into soups, and we use the larger leaves to make wraps. It’s also useful for garnish. It can be a little slow to start. We’ve had better luck starting them indoors and planting seedlings, but directly planting seeds also works (albeit slower…). It likes warm, sunny weather… it’s a mid-summer - mid fall plant for us, but when it’s growing at full rate, it’s almost difficult to keep up with. It likes water, but it isn’t greedy and seems to tolerate the occasional dry spell. Ours grew best in full sun, but even the semi-shaded plants did well.Depending on your climate, it may be perennial or annual. In New England, ours came back a second year; the plants we grew in pots were fine, the ones we grew in the ground were scrubby and anemic and we dug them out and re-seeded. Your mileage may vary….

Very good quality seeds
The lady in my life is originally from Korea and likes to have some foods that remind her of home, one of these items is Kkaennip. After watching her pay $2 for 10 to 12 perilla leaves in the Asian market, we decided to start to grow our own Korean Perilla 깻잎 plants. We started with some seeds picked up and the local market, and then harvested the seeds from those plants when they matured. Over time the quality of the plants was lacking, so this year we decided to start from fresh, and ordered some new seeds from David's Garden Seeds. The seeds were very high quality and the growth has been great. The attached photos are of a little over one month growth, and the plants are going strong. Right now the tallest plants are about 12" tall, and they are getting bigger everyday, and the largest leaves are about 5" across. So after this weekend it is safe to say a large number of them was be harvested and put into use.

Most if not all seeds sprouted and grew!
Instructions said to freeze before planting. I did that with half and then just dropped them on top of the dirt—heard they don’t do well being buried. Sprouts came up quickly and are doing well! They did so well, I did a test in another section. I didn’t freeze these seeds for any period and just dropped them on the dirt. They also all sprouted!I live in Key West, FL, so it is tropical down here. Will see how they do as they grow.

These did great!
Followed directions about freezing seeds before germinating, and they did beautifully. I went a little overboard on how many seeds to start with because I don’t have the best of luck transplanting, but the seedlings really took off once transplanted into a larger space. So looking forward to adding these to my next at home Korean BBQ.

Perilla Photo and Actual Item are different
I received the wrong kind of Perilla Seeds. Photo and actual item doesn’t match.

So far, so good
Well, I followed the directions for putting them in the freezer for two weeks, and they definitely germinated better and faster than a few seeds that I held back. I have about five sprouting so far. Feeling hopeful!
