I think the thing to remember about this film that most people seem to be upset about; its not actually all that action PACKED. It is primarily an odd story about a couple of brothers and their run in with some nasty criminal characters, and yes it's almost entirely due to one of them being pretty dumb. He gets in way over his head and has really no choice but to drag his kid brother along for the ride. That's the primary story at play here, they just dropped a full on plasma rifle into the middle of it to kick it on its head. There's an excellent sense of escalation and even suspense involved, but in order to even make it to the plasma rifle's first firing you'll have to sit through a goodly chunk of the film. I get why this upset some viewers, but I found this approach refreshing. It allowed me to get invested in the characters and main story before the sheer chaos began. It's fairly gritty, and more than a little sad, but also full of humor and touching moments. If you allow yourself to care about the characters more than the rifle. I feel like that's pretty important.Every role is well acted, especially the mains, and James Franco clearly enjoys this kind of role because he shines as usual. Loads of fun to watch. The weapon itself is also a well crafted and written item, with satisfying action and a decent (if somewhat cryptic) explanation.Side note: I call it a Plasma Rifle, but the film never actually identifies it. It behaves in a certain way that makes me think "that's what a rifle firing bolts of magnetically contained plasma might do in real life" so that's just what my mind ran with.In summation, if you're on the fence about this one...yeah I'd say give it a shot. Just be properly patient with it, and treat it as more than just a mindless action flick in order to get the most from it.

Generally, I hold with what my Mom taught me, 'if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything'. I am ready to make an exception today. If I can help one person keep from wasting their hard earned money let alone the time they will never get back, it will be worth it. I was looking for a little Saturday afternoon bubble gum for my brain. The idea of a little kid with an alien blaster from a battle between alien's in a warehouse in Detroit, had some potential I thought. I gave it a few minutes. Then I sped things up and completely skipped the gratuitous bar with prostitutes scene. I kept hoping for the aliens to return for their gun and cause the movie to gain a needed story and point. I asked my husband if he thought that Amazon should provide a service to help make certain I never waste my money on such a stupid movie again. He asked if they have a service to erase the movie from his mind completely, kinda like Men In Black. I went back to finish the laundry which is what I should have been doing and that seemed more interesting and productive. I can't get my 5.99 back. Worse yet, I can't get 43 minutes of my life back. The main character of The Awful Movie, makes a string of bad choices. I may be more like him than I had hoped.

Kin 2018: A surpise very well done good sci fi movie about a young black boy living in the slums of Detriot who stumbles upon a fallen space alien soldier, & retrieves his super high tech space ray gun where over the course of the film due to his white older step brother's bad behavior leads him to use the weapon against local criminals who are chasing them down. James Franco plays the part of the main gangster thug who is chasing the young lad, & he is a vicious bastard indeed. An interesting surprise twist at the end, with well done sci fi adventure themes mixing fantasy with the ugly raw world of modern Detriot's urban decline with gang criminality. We have another good role of the Step Dad played by Dennis Quad, so we have some good elements here of a young good brother dealing with the older bad brother drama mixed with the fantasy.Back in the 70's after Star Wars premiered, there had been a similar movie to this called, "Laser Gun" or "Ray Gun" where a teenager found an alien weapon only to use it for evil & morph into an alien himself. This movie is much better meant for the 2010's & I give it a solid B with a thumbs up.

I’ve read the reviews and some people HATE this movie lol. I actually liked it. Didn’t go in with really high expectations and it’s not a lot of action. More story focused on the relationships in the movie and I liked that. Plus the last scene made me say whaaaat??? This probably would have been better as a prequel cuz it was what was suggested at the end I really wanted to see play out.It wasn’t great, but it didn’t suck either. It wasn’t a waste of my time.Opinions vary tho huh? LolI enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed this film and I hope they continue the story with a sequel. It doesn't have multiple twists and plots but it does have a good heart and an interesting ending that wants me to come back for more.

The writing in this film is so bad I don’t know what to say. The story is about two brothers Eli and Jimmy being on the run from a gangster that Jimmy owes money to. Where to begin with the problems? Eli finds a laser gun left by aliens in a factory that he later uses to help his brother. The aliens want it back. Why did this mix of crime and sci-fi come about? Jimmy just got out of prison and tells Eli that their dad is busy but they’re going on a road trip all the way to the West Coast and Eli says yes, like that’s not suspicious. Jimmy takes Eli into a strip club and they party with a bunch of strippers and no one says anything about Eli being 14 allegedly because Jimmy is spending lots of money. The gangster Jimmy owes money to chases them down even though there’s no way to track them. Basically this whole thing is a mess.C

Die Trailer machten schon Lust auf mehr. Dennoch war der Film im Kino anscheinend ein Flop - absolut zu Unrecht in meinen Augen. Der Film ist superb geschossen, insbesondere die Kameraarbeit erweist sich als sehr gelungen. Dazu eine packende Geschichte die bewusst klein gehalten wird, welches sich insbesondere auf die Charakterentwicklung und die Botschaft des Films auswirkt. Dazu frische, unverbrauchte Schauspieler (sowie einen wirklich fiesen James Franco als Gegenspieler) und ein paar erfrischende SciFi Elemente. Und dann ist da noch der Soundtrack von Mogwai, der dem Streifen einfach das besondere Etwas on top gibt und die hervorragenden Bilder stimmungsvoll unterstützt.Der Film hat trotz seines Themas die Leichtigkeit eines 80er Jahre Streifens und ist einfach ein unterhaltsamer Spielfilm. Nicht mehr und nicht weniger. Und das bei einer Laufzeit um die 100 Minuten, eine Laufzeit die nur noch wenige Filme heutzutage haben. Ich fand ihn extrem kurzweilig und habe mir bereits die US 4K UHD sowie deutsche Blu-ray gekauft und werde jedem nahelegen dem Film eine Chance zu geben.Zeigt Concorde dass die sie dem Film zu Unrecht ein so schmales Release gegeben haben. Das Bonusmaterial der BD ist nicht in HD, obwohl es auf der US BD in HD vorhanden war. Sogar der Trailer lediglich SD. Einfach unbegreiflich, der Film hätte ein gutes Release inkl. einer besonderen Verpackung verdient (Stichwort VHS Retro-Edition, stimmungsvolles Embossed Steelbook oder Ähnliches).

Buena película, entretenida. Esperaba más pero es aceptable.Viene con audio en inglés y subtitulada al español. También tiene el doblaje en español latino. Único detalle es que se anuncia con slipcover y llegó sin el.

Viele Leute heutzutage wollennur Ka-Woom.Dann gibt es die Anderen, Denen der Film und die gelungene Mischung bestimmt gefallen wird.
