Q: Does this pickup have an adhesive backing? Would it work on a banjo?

Yes, it comes with an adhesive strip which you can use to mount it. It's not made for banjo but would pickup the strings and produce a sound, although the balance/tone may not be ideal for that instrument.

Q: Will this pickup loud enough to play live? I struggle with the built in pickup on my hound dog

The built in hound dog pickups are awful in my opinion. I put this pickup on my hound dog and love it. Since this is a humbucker, you end up losing a lot of the "dobro" tone, and it more or less starts sounding like a hollowbody electric with just a hint of the dobro twang. Regardless, this is a great pickup. I have played it dirty through my JCM800 and don't have any feedback issues. I carefully removed the wire mesh around one of the smaller sound holes on the hounddog and fed this pickups wiring through there, and then glued the mesh back on. A luthier could probably do something more professional, but this worked for me. Good luck.

Q: Can this be used on a square neck effectively?

Probably. Check the string clearance. I have it on a resophonic guitar with fairly low clearance
