Great Book for Prospective SW!
This book is amazing! I love how the authors provided all the different aspects in Social Work from the input of the Social Workers themselves. They were able to describe what they manage to do on a daily basis, and yet, each day is not the same. It gives a greater understanding on what social work is and how important it is to society. The authors also provide questions to the readers, so we (us the readers) can reflect and provide our general input. Not to mention the book also provides resources about Social Work. Overall, I am so glad that I came across this book, and thankful for all the Social Workers out there making a difference.

The way it is arranged is great in that each baby chapter is a day in ...
I am currently in a stage of my life where it's time to decide what I want to do next. I had toyed around with the idea of getting a Masters in Social Work, but wasn't sure what that would mean exactly in a day to day sense. So, I bought this book hoping it would answer some questions I had concerning what exactly it is that social workers do every day. I found the book incredibly helpful. The way it is arranged is great in that each baby chapter is a day in the life of a social worker in a different field. I got to experience what each kind of social worker does and it really helped narrow the scope of what I wanted to do. I have now decided to get my Masters in Social Work with an emphasis in criminology. This book was paramount to helping make my decision! A definite must buy for anyone thinking about going into this field.

in depth book, could cover more areas though
The book was really helpful to me, because i'm going to be graduating with my BSW in a year and going on to grad school so i have to pick a concentration. The only problem i found with this book was that it had a lot of information on some specializations, such as working with older adults or criminal justice, and other areas were neglected. There wasn't anything about working for an adoption agency -- mainly i wanted to learn more about other areas in social work that aren't normally mentioned. Besides this, the book was good at giving you in in-depth look at what your life would be like as a social worker in these areas.

Very Inspiring and Insightful!
When I decided to buy this book it was becaus I was already thinking of a career in social work. And, I must say that the book is very inspiring and insightful. The stories come from different types of social workers, in different fields, under different circumstances, and really gives the reader a sense of what each worker goes through on a typical day. It's also very true to the field. Since buying the book I have had the opportunity to work in social service, and the day-to0day events adn issues the workers deal with in the book are very realistic and honest. It's definately a must-read for anyone thinking about the social work field, no matter what service or population you are thinking about working with.

A book for the aspiring social worker
Absolutely love this book! The humors and self-honest narratives remind me of my field seminars, while working on my MSW. I also hadnβt realized the diversity with the social work profession. If you are thinking of becoming a social worker or are even feeling burn out and want to remember why you became a social worker; I highly recommend this book!

I love this book
I have seen where this book was a class requirement. I bought it as I am going into the field, and have loved every page of it. The intro, the individual stories, the various examples of career options and review questions to consider- wonderful! Highly recommend for those people deciding whether this is a career they would like to enter and to learn more about the various career paths a social worker can take.

Loved this book
Loved this book! With my plans to start my MSW this fall, I found it very fascinating to read about the broad range of social work options. Whether you're already in the social work field, planning to enter it, or just interested in catching a glimpse of what the field is like, I would recommend.

Written for a middle school audience
As a social worker, I expected an insightful look at my colleagues' daily lives. Instead, I received a text oriented at recruiting middle school students. Not so much as a compound sentence or complex thought can be found in the entire book. As an example, the below is a direct quote from the text."Working with nearly on thousand seniors means that I will invariably run into one of 'my' seniors in the community. It is indeed a treat to see a familiar face in the supermarket, mall or library and to be greeted enthusiastically. Unfortunately, the senior social worker must also cope with the physical deterioration of the aging and the inevitability of their deaths. My experience in bereavement counseling comes into play. I must support the grieving family as well as the seniors who have lost a friend. How do I cope with the emotional and physical demands of the job? The staff organizational design provides the answer. The Senior Department at the Jewish Community Center falls under the auspices of the Adult Services Department. This team concept allows for shared ideas, as well as peer support. The Center incorporates a yearly staff retreat for team building and enhanced customer service skills. I have had the privilege of serving on the planning committee, which has led to heightened camaraderie with my colleagues."I fully recommend any adult skip this book.
