Try using an Iron - works wonders
Ok, so I have used this on a couple of different items and a couple of different ways;HEAT GUN METHOD: Filson lightweight dry cotton cruiser. First time I used a waterproof glove to rub it in and then heat gun and let it hang a few days = a nice result but had some of the funky odor (which I'm ok with) that did take awhile to fade. Used the jacket for 4 days straight in that wet Alaska weather and stayed dry the whole time.IRON METHOD; Today I did a refresh for winter, Sprayed it on in small sections, rubbed it in with the glove, and used a Iron on medium heat to bake it in = it's ready to wear and the patina finish looks amazing. For me the iron method worked much better than the heat gun, faster and much less after odor. Basically ready to wear no waiting. Your results may vary. I bought a cheap iron for 10 bucks to use on the jacket because some of the wax will build up in the steamer holes of the iron which could upset the other half. The other item I used it on a was pair of "waterproof" hiking shoes that started leaking through the membrane after the 2nd use and the return date had passed. Gave them two coats of this product = issue solved. Feet stay nice and dry, used a heat gun to bake it in coat.

Awesome!
Purchased to add some stain resistance to my son's new white Vans shoes. It didn't change the color of the canvas. The texture became slightly glossier but that was the only change. Smell was minimal, I was able to apply it indoors on a rainy day. Two coats, and now liquids just run right off the surface. Thank you, Nikwax!

Seems like an excellent product.
I know that other reviewers didn't like this product but I think that it's terrific. iAs others have observed, this water repellent is a white water based liquid that has a mild aroma similar to Elmer's glue. The smell is very mild, which is why this product is very suitable for indoor use. The liquid is much less viscous than glue, and is closer to the viscosity of water than glue. Spray the liquid onto a section of your jacket or coat, and then use a 2 inch paint brush to smooth the product onto the surface of your garment. Repeat the process for each section of the garment. As other reviewers have explained, the product will appear as a white coating. DO NOT be alarmed, because this product dries into a perfectly transparent finish that leaves a very nice original look sheen. After I saw the results with my first jacket, then applied this product to a long Barbour rain coat as well as a second Barbour acket. One bottle handled all three garments, and they all look great. I had enough left over to use the same process (spray and smooth with paint brush) on an old cotton rain hat. Although it has not rained I poured a glass of water over the hat and one of my jackets and it immediately beaded up and rolled off. Success! The only reason I did not give this product 5 stars is that I don't know how long it will last. Perhaps I'll provide an update in February 2014, by then, my coats will have been through several storms. Note that using a paint brush works better than a sponge or cloth, because the brush will not absorb the liquid. Also, because this is a water based product, your need to let your garments dry in a heated space. If you try to dry your jacket in an unheated garage or basement during cold weather, you'll be waiting forever.

Worked well for me - just use it as designed for best results :)
This product worked good for me - I was trying to re-waterproof my carhartt coat. I think it helped a lot. Although, I noticed it did leave a wax like film on the coat that was visible as a white film on my black coat, more noticeable in some areas then others. It is a work coat so that is not an issue and I had the feeling that the white film would ware off rather quickly and no longer be visible. This in-turn makes me wonder how long the generally waterproofing will last. We will see. It also makes me wonder what the washing machine version of this stuff does to the washing machine - does it leave a wax coating on the machine as well?It did not work well on my hat - but hat was an experiment as the hat is not cotton. No damage mind you, just did not seem to benefit from it.

Convenient and effective was alternative.
I don’t know why this product has such mediocre reviews. Yes when you apply it it doesn’t smell great. That’s true. But frankly solid waxes don’t smell great either and like solid waxes the smell disappears after a week or so. I have several waxed coats and jackets and before I discovered this product I was using solid waxes and a heat gun to re-wax. This is a messy labor intensive activity. The Nikwax ends all of that. You spray it on. Wipe it even and let it dry. It not only provides water repelence comparable to solid waxes, but it also gives the garment the freshly waxed appearance and weight. Using solid wax, re-waxing takes more than an hour between rubbing the wax into the fabric, heating it distributing the heated wax evenly. Panel by panel. The same re-waxing using nikwax takes under 10 minutes.

Great product
Easy to use. Has a slight odor like Elmer’s glue. Very slight, and goes away completely. Didn’t give 5 stars for durability because I haven’t worn it it the rain yet.
