Realistic Modeling for Toy Trains: A Hi-Rail Guide (Classic Toy Trains Books)

A Good Book to add to a collection
The book is okay. Has a good bit of information but as a beginner it lacks the detail. I had to do a lot of research to help fill the blanks. And some of the important information like ballest and weathering track was too generic and basic with little to no detail. But it has informed me to other things I wasn't aware of.

Good book for the Hi Railer
The author Dennis Brennan has written a good book. The book goes into detail on how to make a small hi rail 3 rail O layout. He gives a great explanation of the how to make a water scene which is really neat & how he does it, it looks simple enough, just time consuming to do in my opinion. I would like to see more books from this author and maybe a larger layout or an extension of this current layout. For 3 rail trains it is small sized layout. Great book a good read.

Master Modeler
Dennis takes you through his HiRail build. He combines old school Lionel assesories with modern technology. He takes readily available items and great observation of details, to build his layout. This is the book that inspired me to try my first train layout. I am constantly referencing things in his book. His layout is a combination of design, cleaver craftsmanship, and the realism I was looking for.

Good info but very specific...
This book covers the building of this layout. You can use the ideas and tecniques on your own layout, but you need to understand that. This book covers everything, but in a strange way IMO. all things are done to that one specific kit or part. Lots of referance to "the parts box" most of us do not have. I am just starting out, and do not have two girder bridges to cut and put together. So I say a good search of some forums or websites could have supplied this info. The pictures are good and there are some good ideas to be had.

Excellent book on an O scale layout BUT will scale ...
Excellent book on an O scale layout BUT will scale it down for my HO scale . Very good reading and good photos of the completed layout ! Differently take a look at this book, layouts don't have to be complicated and with Dennis Brennan its a lot easier !

Good Book for Scenery
I bought this book to help me create more realistic and interesting scenery, this definitely met that need and allowed me to rethink some of my layout and scenery.

Great advice!
He shows great examples of how to generate realistic scenery for a three rail layout. I am interested in city scenery and this book shows that well.
