Read the ingredients - this contains more indigo than henna
I admit I didn't look at the ingredient list because I wasn't expecting there to be blue dye in my box of red dye, and I wondered why my hair not only turned out super dark, but the water ran blue when it came time to rinse my hair instead of the usual greenish. The color chart on the box implied I'd wind up with a slightly deeper/darker red than what I have and I got grayish-brown instead, and after washing my hair every day with dandruff shampoo in an attempt to remove the indigo, my hair is still pretty dark. Also, and this was an unforeseen issue, I believe I may have received a box with a bad batch of henna, which is why the indigo was more pronounced and the red was non-existant. This wasn't anyone's fault and there's no way to tell at a glance it would happen, but it still happened and it still sucked, and now I've got really dark hair that I may have no choice but to grow out in order to re-apply henna and have it show up.Sadly, no refund for me because by the time I got around to using the dye, my return window had closed. I tried contacting Light Mountain customer service about what to do, but after an initial email asking some specifics about my hair, they never responded to me again about how to go about getting the blue off my hair.I still recommend the brand overall for anyone who wants to use henna in their hair, but be warned that this particular shade is really dark because of all the indigo in it. I definitely got the right color - the bag inside the box said "Chestnut" and there was no reason for me to suspect it would come out so dark. It's my fault for not looking at the ingredients and seeing I was getting more blue dye than red dye, but like I said, I wasn't expecting anything other than henna and amla to be in the box.

Excellent product
Color is true. I can reuse the box 5 or more times which makes it very affordable.

Back to my roots
After years of torturing and damaging my hair and scalp with chemical dyes causing my thin fine hair to break and thin more due to the abuse...I decided to go back to nature. I am so glad I did. About a month ago, I decided to go with purple streaks which meant bleaching then adding purple dye. I loved it at first, but, it faded quickly and severely dried and fried my hair. I waited a month with almost daily washing to get as much dye out as possible. The fading purple looked awful, but, I was on a mission to fade it out as much as possible so I could go back to a natural brown with henna and give up chemical dyes for good. After tons of research, I chose Light Mountain Chestnut and I couldnโt be happier. My hair turned a rich warm brown, there is still some residual purple showing through, but, it blends into the brown Well and is hardly noticeable if you arenโt looking for it. As my hair grows, with regular cuts, it will be gone soon enough. My hair already feels and looks thicker, shinier and healthier. It is extremely important to follow the instructions. Do allow time for the henna to cure. Do the strand and sensitivity tests. Do Not use metal at all with the henna. Be sure to use distilled water and not tap water unless you know for sure that your water does not have any trace metals in it or other chemicals from treatment. I suspect some of the people ending up with green or blue hair may have used tap water and not distilled. Do not shampoo the henna out, but, do use a conditioner instead.Instead of using plain water, I used dark brewed hot coffee to mix with the henna. Others use black tea, both are said to help aid the richness of the brown color.I hope this review helps others considering henna hair color if they have damaged, over processed hair or those that are trying to color over brightly dyed colors (like purple). Best of luck and I hope you enjoy your results!

Chemical Free Goodness
I researched henna extensively before purchasing this item and recommend any interested do the same if new to henna. There's a wealth of resources via Google; one website includes the individual color properties of the various plant ingredients mixed with henna to create different shades. That being said, you can buy the individual plant powders and portion as you see fit, but I chose to (as a henna virgin) go with the boxed proportions. I made sure to find pure plant product contained therein, as some companies' claims of henna are rather loose. Light Mountain is true to its word, happily. My hair, a naturally dull, flat brown, deepened to a dimensional chocolate shade with this Chestnut color. I opted not to use heat, as the instructions suggest doing so may bring out orange properties (in retrospect, I wish I had to bring out red highlights--the initial result was a bit murky but cleared up after a few washes, possibly due to mixing the henna with coffee). My hair feels thicker than it has in the past without as many dead ends, but I can't say if that's the henna or the fact that I stopped using chemical shampoos and products as well as stopped straightening. It's been about four weeks since I applied and while the color is still noticeable, I'd like to attempt a lighter shade for spring. I'm trying the Light Brown shade next, mixed with lemon juice and heat to really enhance the lightening properties, hopefully enough to achieve a dirty blond--but in case it goes awry, I bought another Chestnut to cover up any potential mishaps. You CANNOT use bleach over henna if you mess up, or you're likely to melt your hair off. I don't know if the same applies to chemical color, but I wouldn't take the risk. All in all, a positive experience! I just wish it didn't take quite so long to ship, but well worth the wait over damaging my hair with chemical color in a local salon (and cheaper, too).
