An inspiring and heartwarming story that illustrates the power of perseverance: Charles Bradley never quit; he finally succeeded after 40 years of diligence. Furthermore few deserve this success more as Bradley seems like a humble guy with a great heart. If this doesn't motivate you to never give up even when success takes forever, what will?

I recently heard of him and was dismayed to hear he had passed away. A nice inciteful movie intonhis life that features his wonderful music.

Not only is Charles an immense raw talent, he has the soul of a sweet real honest human being and it comes through in this film. You can't help but be touched or affected. Best doc I've seen in years.

This film lays bare the soul of an angelic man with an angelic voice. Charles Bradley continues to touch the hearts of those of us on earth from his home in heaven.

I've seen Charles Bradley twice in the last couple years and had no idea where he came from. This was an awesome documentary, very touching!

I have been listening to Charles Bradley for a couple years now and absolutely love his records. But my appreciation for this man's music ability and will to survive has exponentially grown after seeing this documentary. An inspiring story based around modern soul classics that anyone (not just music geeks like myself) will enjoy watching. Buy or rent this movie it will not disappoint... I bet you have "The World (Is Going Up In Flames)" stuck in your head after seeing this film ; )

Gem of a doc

Charles Bradley tingelte jahrzehntelang als James-Brown-Double durch kleine Bars und Pinten. Dabei kam er dem "Godfather of Soul" nicht nur stimmlich erstaunlich nahe, auch seine Bühnenperformance war eine Hommage an den "Hardest working man in showbusiness". Im Alter von 62 Jahren startete Bradley dann beim Plattenlabel Daptone eine eigenständige Karriere - und nahm seine erste Platte (mit dem Titel "No time for dreaming") auf. Seinen Werdegang vom James-Brown-Imitator zum eigenständigen Soul-Sänger zeichnet die berührende Dokumentation "Soul of america" nach. Regisseur Poull Brien begleitete Charles Bradley in den Monaten vor dem Album-Debüt, reiste mit ihm und der "Menahan Street Band" zu einigen Auftritten und beobachtete den Soul-Star in ganz privaten Momenten.Dabei wird ein zutiefst sympathisches Bild von Charles Bradley gezeichnet. Er selbst verdient nicht viel Geld und unterstützt nach Leibeskräften seine greise Mom, damit diese in ihrem Haus bleiben kann. Neben dem Geldmangel ist der gewaltsame Tod von Charles' Bruder ein weiterer Schicksalsschlag für die Bradleys. Charles Bradley ist mit wenig zufrieden - möchte jedoch seinen Papagei nicht missen. Es sind besondere Momente, die die Dokumentation festhält. So freut sich Bradley beispielsweise fast schon mit kindlicher Begeisterung über den ersten Zeitungsartikel über ihn, schwärmt von Weggefährten, die ihn (nicht nur finanziell) unterstützt haben, oder berichtet von dem Lieblings-Huhn aus Kindertagen, das durch eine Unachtsamkeit der Tante im Backofen landete. Daneben sieht man aber auch Bilder von Bradley und Sharon Jones, die derzeit wohl bekannteste Interpretin beim Daptone. Jones wurde von Bradley teilweise als Vorband unterstützt.Einziges Ärgernis der DVD-Umsetzung: Es fehlen englische Untertitel - und die deutschen Untertitel sind gelinde gesagt eine Frechheit. Noch nie habe ich Untertitel mit derart vielen Satz- und Grammatikfehlern gesehen. So wird selbst das Plattenlabel Daptone falsch geschrieben (Daptome), einige Worte sind seltsame US-Deutsch-Almagame (Schoulter) - und auch ansonsten sind die Untertitel richtig schlecht umgesetzt.Davon abgesehen bietet die DVD neben der Dokumentation auch noch die beiden Musikvideos "The World (is going up in flames)" und "Heartaches and pain".Insgesamt ist "Soul of america" das Porträt eines bodenständigen Sängers geworden, der am eigenen Leib erlebt (hat), woher der Soul seine Wurzeln hat. Sensationell und somit verdiente fünf Sterne.

Unica pecca tecnica: la custodia è arrivata rotta in un angolo, ma il contenuto era salvo.Merita, soprattuto di grande interesse per i veri amanti della buona musica e per i curiosi genuini!

Ich habe Charles Bradley im April 2016 in Köln live gesehen und bin begeistert. Ungeheuerlich wie gut er live ist. Vorher nie von Ihm gehört. Meine Frau hat mir nun zum Geburtstag diese DVD geschenkt. Alles was mein Vorrezensend geschrieben hat stimmt. Tiefe Einblicke in das Leben eines Ausnahmemusikers.
