Obsolete, but tough and serviceable
Meant to be a SCUBA dive light. The weight works out to very close to neutral buoyancy in salt water.Yes, LEDs offer much greater efficiency, I wish Pelican would make a conversion to utilize these housings, because these things can be tossed back on deck dozens of times without harm. The handle would break off, but you can drive a truck over the housing. These are also used by a lot of HAZMAT and S&R teams, probably for reliability sake, but the design incorporates a hydrogen absorption capsule so it won't explode next to you. There is peace of mind knowing you have TWO filaments in the bulb. Great for wreck and cave diving, as the capacity of the D cells will last thru many tanks of gas.Technology is old school, but the upside is that keeping it going is pretty cheap. No expensive LiIon batteries, bulbs are pricey but still available. Mine is now about 20 years old, killed off several leaking batteries, but still cleaned up to work just fine.I really like the way the handle can be reconfigured on the rail. Like that the switch locks in the off position when not in use. A trusted friend.
