Doesn't include Hmong in California
How can a book titled "Hmong America: Reconstructing Community in Diaspora" not include the largest settlement of Hmong in California? Aside from a big dot on a map, California is missing from the discussion.

Excellent Ethnography and History
This excellent ethnography and history examines the lives of Hmong refugees as they resettle in the United States. The book focuses on the community in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) in Minnesota, the largest concentration of Hmong in the United States. It not only provides a history of the Secret War in Laos, Hmong resettlement in the U.S., but also explores the lives of Hmong Americans in the Twin Cities. Unlike Ann Fadiman's book, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, Vang's book underscores the agency of Hmong people in diaspora in building a new community in the U.S. I have taught the book in undergrad courses and students love reading and discussing it.

Disappointed
Basically a boring text book....other two purchased engaged the reader and allowed a better understanding of the issues at hand, but this book, meh.

Basic description
There is no analysis of the community. It's a basic description and reads like a community study of Hmong people in America.
