Listening to Stone

Please judge this book by its cover for the title conveys with its contents. The author not only brings life to stone, he brings poetry. The pages are an equal mix of "how to" projects, including where to source stone and the philosopical implications of moving stone out of its natural setting for man's pleasure. You not only learn some of the joys and challenges of stone masonry but by the end of the book really want to work in the field or have dinner with Mr. Snow.

This makes a good companion to Snow's other book about building stone walls.The allusion to another kind of stoning (a la Shirley Jackson's iconic short story) is an unfortunate mistake by a careless editor. Stones have a beauty all their own, and this book makes it clear how to appreciate the medium as an observer or a builder. Would make a good gift for a gardener.

I liked this book so well I bought 2 of them. Accidentally. I found it in a tourist trap at a ridiculous price, then bought it here. As much a philosophy book as a construction book.

Great book - that is earmarked and highlighted, for my reference. It is definitely a resource book as I build stone planters in the spring!

Reconnect with the genius of the ancient, environmentally sane builders and architects! Serious students not just "gardeners"! Go buy it!
