The Collected Sermons of Dietrich Bonhoeffer

A Collection That Justifies Repeated Readings
Here is Bonhoeffer (1906–1945) at his most accessible: preaching to everyday women and men from different pulpits from the time of his fledgling ministry to his mature years. The selections have been thoughtfully made by Victoria Barnett, a recognized scholar of Bonhoeffer's works, who places each sermon in its specific historical and biographical context. These sermons are scripturally grounded and deeply spiritual, but you'll find here no feel-good fluff: these are serious reflections, most of them delivered in a time of crisis. The scholar will appreciate the development traceable in D.B.'s thinking. The lay reader can take it just as Bonhoeffer intended: the Christian gospel that encourages a firm stand against social corruption. A slender volume, it is rather pricey; Fortress Press may or may not move it into less expensive softcovers.

Enlightening
I've read several of Bonhoeffer's works and have often struggled, having to reread sections multiple times to understand them. They are amazing, but the Germanic structure and rigor can be a challenge. With his sermons these challenges seemed to pass away. At times I even found myself reading them aloud to myself, the depth of meaning coming off the page as I read and spoke the words. Particular sermons made me come back and reread them multiple times, not because I didn't understand what was written but because the implications of Christian faith Bonhoeffer drew are profound and challenging.I'd highly recommend the sermons for anyone thinking of reading something by Bonhoeffer. Having been written to deliver a specific point to his congregations they are more accessible than other writings and an excellent point of entry.

What a treasure!
For fans of Bonhoeffer this book of his sermons is a real treasure. I have ear most of the sermons several times now. I am amazed how "relevant" his thoughts are despite being crafted some 70 years ago. One will enjoy reading these sermons much more if one first reads a good biography like "Bonhoeffer" by Metaxas, but these fine sermons also stand alone as pastoral exhortations, reflections, and admonitions from one of the finest the theologians and pastors in the first half of the twentieth century. Well-worth the read . . . and re-read!

genuinely helpful
In reading this I noted that, based on his writing, that this is a very reachable man, not above others or high brow, but genuinely helpful and concerned for others.

For the serious bible student
Although Bonhoffer's sermons were written in the thirties, the topics are pertinent to today's church and society. The sermons are both simpl and deep. They can be examined on many levels, from the newest Christian to a biblical scholar. I was particularly moved by the sermon on forgiveness. It is something we all struggle with, and he has a unique outlook. This is not "pop"theology or light reading. However, it is not as hard to read as his book on discipleship. I have bought several copies to share with my friends.

This is one of the best books I have ever read
This is one of the best books I have ever read. What a great family of distinguished achievers were Bonhoeffer's family! The text gives an excellent description and reasons for the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany following WWI. Bonhoeffer's older sisters married guys who were leaders of the counter-intelligence agency who conspired to assassinate Hitler. The brother-in-law got Bonhoeffer involved in the conspiracy which led to his death.

Bonhoeffer was a rare man who opposed the Nazi's. He gave his life seeking justice but some may say he over-stepped the mark by being involved in the assassination attempt on Hitler - whilst being an ordained Christian minister. Regardless of the hyperbole his works are worth reading and this was purchased to accompany 'Discipleship' arguably his finest work.

A very interesting and useful book
