Elmer and the Dragon (My Father's Dragon)

We bought the whole series (My Father's Dragon, Elmer and the Dragon, The Dragons of Blueland) for our 3 year old son. He LOVES these books. We have read them at least five times each since buying them a couple weeks ago. A chapter is a great length for a quick bedtime story, although we usually end up reading two or three chapters.There are some pages without any pictures, but no more than one spread in a row is without a picture, which helps keep his interest. Additionally, the pictures are well-placed so that if anything happens that kids might find scary (like Elmer meeting hungry tigers in My Father's Dragon) there is a picture that shows that everything is okay on that same page. My son hates conflict in books, or for things to be too scary, so I feel like these books strike a great balance. Nobody (Elmer, the Dragon, any animals they meet) gets injured or eaten, they just get bested with clever solutions.In these books, Elmer is kind, helpful, and resourceful. I am happy to read these books over and over to my son because the story is good and Elmer is a good role model. I would recommend this series highly as a first chapter book series to read aloud to any child.

I bought this book and received a very poorly put together book. There is so much glue on the binding that the spine is completely round, the pages don’t sit straight on the binding and because of this the spine is already broken and pages have separated from the spine. I asked for a replacement thinking this was a fluke but the replacement arrived in the exact same manner. On top of the spine/binding issues both had multiple pages that were creased or damaged.I’m sure the author has written an amazing story, however, their publisher is doing them a huge disservice with having zero quality control. There’s no point buying a book that is falling apart before it ever gets read.

I loved having my parents read this to me as a child. I loved reading it to my children and now I love reading it to my grandchildren!

This book was a favorite of mine and now I am thrilled to say that it is a winner with my four year old grandson who is now listening to the full set (all three books) for the third time. I have no doubt when he can read on his own, he will come back and reread these wonderful stories.

Classic, but loved title. 💙 My 1st graders loved listening g to this story. Also a great read for 2nd and 3rd grade readers.

What a fabulous story. I shared it with my second grade class and they just loved it. The illustrations are just so beautiful!

I got this book for a read aloud in my first grade classroom. Not only is the story very engaging for first graders but it includes a map of Elmer's travels so you can integrate/introduce some map skills.

We really loved reading these three books, they took us all to far away lands and imaginations grew. We have re-read several times and still loving them. Would highly recommend to anyone with young children.
