OVERCHARGED 😤
I dislike that I was overcharged. I LOVE the book! Did not disappoint. My only gripe; I paid $18.78. When received, a sticker is on it for $5.98! 😤 that’s F’ed up. Unprofessional and false advertisement.

So atmospheric and engaging.
I grew up in Tucson in the 80s and 90s and this book took me right back. Given that it is now 30 years old, it is almost prescient about industries, scams, and ideologies. I got it first from the library, but couldn't finish in three weeks so I bought it (a big concession for a librarian). For me it was a long contemplative read that I would step away from for a week, but always come back to.

prettysnake says, sssssuper book Sssssssilko!!!!
Not nearly as complex as some would like to make it. The "land" interacts with people to manifest its spirits. Those who are "cut off" from the land, become alienated and "alien." 500 years is not so long in the grand scheme of things. What is yet to come is what has been before, a people who are shaped by the spirits of the Americas. Her novel might not make some people "happy." It certainly isn't your romantic "Indian story" (that so many people seem to want). The lives it depicts in fiction aren't far from the convoluted inner workings of some of the indigenous movements here in the Americas (the Zapatista, AIM, etc.) nor from the "cultural elite" who rot in their penthouses in the monuments of Western civilization. It might not be an "easy" read, but it is certainly an engaging one, and a well-crafted one. Highly recommended.

Amazingly fun novel.
Leslie Marmon Solko’s novel is one of my favorite novels. I knew her father who passed away earlier this year. He was a great guy and passed on a truly wonderful Laguna Pueblo history to Leslie. She is an incredible writer and poet. You’ll love Almanac Of The Dead!

Ok story but way to long
At first I really enjoyed reading the book. There book tells stories from different perspectives and how loves intertwine. The book seemed to be leading to a climax or full intersection of everyone's lives. But by the end,it didn't seem to be leading to anything. There was no real ending and was quite disappointing. It's like you took a snap shot in time of a day in the life but didn't tell enough of the beginning or the end to get the full story .I suppose that may be the point the author was trying to make, that our western culture teaches to expect immediate change/gratification compared to indigenous cultures. But I did t need a 900 page book on it.

Nature speaks through a paper product
This book was published a year before I arrived in the Southwest from NYC, pivoting from Tucson to Taos where I have remained for 24 years. Tucson in 1993 precipitated a cultural shock for me, that introduced the ancient native American legacy into my understanding of spiritual culture and how white culture was attempting to smother this power. This book colors in the line drawing of my imagination and brings hope and imagination to the struggle to redeem mankind from the dark spiral of ignorant materialism. It's fiction but the symbols are alive, even more so after 24 years.

A Tedious Novel
This is the most difficult novel I have ever attempted to read. It is enormous with more characters than the reader can track. With the exception of one minor character, every character is despicable, corrupt, and morally degenerate. The native Americans fair no better than the white characters. Usually, Silko's novels have an "other worldly" tone with myths and dreams mixed into the drama, but "Almanac of the Dead" is missing this. Silko catalogs the corruption of each character in graphic concrete prose. There are no winners in this novel--only a multitude of losers. It is well written and Silko carefully defines each character, but the tone of the novel leaves the reader longing for a cleansing bath.

Kindle edition incomplete!
I bought the Kindle edition of this book, and it turned out that this edition had silently(!) omitted an important map that is part of the print editions, which is inacceptable in my opinion. Those who want the complete book might be better off buying a print edition.

Awesome book. Very disturbing (because of the many prophecies that were fulfilled) and if you go until the end it will be one of the most rewarding books you'll ever read. It's a must.

Pirated copy received
Received a pirated, low-quality book. The pages, cover instantly felt it was a pirated copy collected from roadside stalls. Kindly be aware. Giving one star for the seller and the service. But the novel itself is a manifesto of indigenous population across the world and indeed an interesting one, if you have patience.
