I bought this to protect my abdominal area from my cat (who loves to sit on my lap for an hour or two per day) as she had just returned from an Iodine 131, radioactive element, treatment for hyperthyroidism. I don't have anyway to measure the radiation I'm exposed to so I bought this to give me the full protection I wanted. 0.5 mm of lead is sufficient to stop the emissions from 131 I.
