Infamous gunslinger and outlaw Wild Bill Hickok (Luke Hemsworth) attempts to escape his past by settling in the small town of Abilene, Kansas. The mayor (Kris Kristofferson), captivated by Wild Bill s unparalleled gun skills, offers him a job as the town marshal. Attempts to protect the town are soon challenged when a band of outlaws threaten Wild Bill and the laws he administered. Among the outlaws are powerful saloon owner Phil Poe (Trace Adkins), whose relationship with Bill s ex-lover (Cameron Richardson) stirs tension. Poe puts a bounty on Wild Bill s head but with the help of lawman Hardin aka Little Arkansas, Wild Bill sets out to fight the villainous bandits and save Abilene from danger.

A Good, Traditional Oater
Not a bad western. Don't get me wrong, it's not a Tombstone or an Open Range. Hickok is a lower budget affair. That being said, the production values are pretty good. I've seen a lot worse in direct-to-video westerns. Along those lines, the acting is a sight better than many of these westerns that go straight to DVD and streaming.Hemsworth is good in the title role. We get genre staples Kris Kristofferson, Bruce Dern, and Peter Sherayko, albeit in small roles. That is okay, because Hemsworth carries the film just fine. Trace Adkins, as the villain, has gotten better in his acting abilities and the western genre seems to suit him fine.Overall, this is a solid effort. I would have liked a few more gunfights, but that's a small complaint.Hickok doesn't do anything groundbreaking, and it isn't the best western to be released in recent years. However, it is good entertainment and as far as the direct-to-video market goes, this is one of the better ones. Recommended.

Couldn't finish it; it's a movie will no likable or interesting characters
Movie just dragged. Acting was "B" or even "C" level. Script, again, "B" or "C". The way the movie developed, the protagonist (Hickok) was not likable, sympathetic, or even very interesting. Your protagonist can be a villain, a hero, or even a drunk, but he at the very least must be interesting.Nothing else of merit, i.e. supporting actors. The man who played Hardin was probably as interesting as any of them. Kristofferson was there lending his name, and Adkins, I suppose, so he could be a movie star. Kristofferson was a heck of an actor in his day, and appears to have much recovered from the dementia that's plagued him for at least a decade, but he's a shell of his former self in this movie. There was just no character development. In the end, the movie was boring, just nothing and no one you cared about. I regret the time wasted. Some might like some aspects of the movie, so I gave it a generous 3 stars; much less, in my estimation.

Predictable story of a legend of the old west
I had high hopes but this seemed like a non event. Not an especially good storyline and the plot was ho hum. For me Luke Hemsworth just doesn't quite fit the cowboy role and Kris is definitely showing his age. Trace Adkins was a pleasant surprise but even he seemed a touch out of place. If there are no other westerns available give this one a try. If there are other options, give this a pass.

Most Boring Western
I have not seen a Western for awhile was hoping to see some action with a plot that would keep the story interesting. Got 3/4 of the movie in a saloon drinking whiskey and bragging about how quick-draw they are. Aging so-called Actors did not add to the movie and sounded mostly like they were doing a first reading off of a poorly written script. Hickok put another nail in the coffin of westerns

No action or adventure in an action/adventure movie
This movie is certainly not a historical drama, so I assume it was meant to be a wild west gun fighter action flick. The problem is that there is virtually no real action and a lot of very meh acting loading the front of this train wreck in the making.Like I wanted to like it, I bought the thing for a bit of western fun, but nope, so bad couldnt even get through like 20 minutes.

Acting was not terrible but the story failed to hold my attention
This offering is more defined by what its not that what it is. Some of the other reviewers who gave it higher marks said," it's not a Tombstone or an Open Range". I would add it is no True Grit either(including the sequel). Ithink part of the problem is the total lack of realism and dumb dialogue. Confederates did not use gatling guns in combat and as far as I know it was not fashionable for men to be sporting shaved chests in the late 1800's.For me, I just couldn't get past the Smarmy stuffed shirt (or shirtless) hero trope propping up a story that just wasn't original.

Don't waste your time.
Well, I guess that older brother Luke Hemsworth tried to become the star that his 2 brothers are......but this isn't that vehicle. Here we took a larger than life character in American history and made him trivial and dull and boring. I almost felt bad for Luke, he didn't even seem to try at all, just seemed to go through the motions. You may recognize some of the other actors Trace Adkins, big gruff guy who just kept ordering others to kill Hickok. Kris Krsitofferson and Bruce Dern are the star power and they do okay but are strangled by a bad script. Stay away from this mess for so many reasons, when you here the cap gun sounds coming from what are supposed to be 6 shooters, you know you are in trouble.

Made for the trailer, not viewing
This is a poor version of Bill Hickok's colorful life. It was dumbed down, more for TV viewing or just to compile bites for a vivid trailer. More shooting and killing than needed, and the characters didn't mesh. Missed the mark.

Very disappointing
Very disappointing considering the cast. This deals with Wild Bill Hickok's appointment as Marshall of Abilene in 1871 and is loosely based upon his short time there and interaction with John Wesley Hardin and others. Hickok had a fascinating and colourful life and his death was depicted in the excellent TV series Deadwood. Sadly this movie is poor and Hemsworth hopeless.

Cinematic rubbish
This is probably the worst Western that I have had the misfortune to watch in many years. I was taken in by the blurb and this travesty purports to be the 'true story of Hitchcock'.There was no attempt at period authenticity, the actors seemed to have strolled onto the very poor sets from whichever soap operas they were appearing in. The storyline is rubbish and all involved should be truly ashamed of this horrible mash-up. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY - leave this garbage well alone!!

Fair.
A tad corny but entertaining. Just don't expect too much historic accuracy.

Failure on all levels !!!
I found this movie interesting in that it is definitely not a big budget smooth production. It's almost as though I could see what they were trying to do but they couldn't pull it off. I enjoy western movies, however, the acting was shaky at best. The story development was rushed and awkward. Much of the time it felt like it had been patched together. They seemed to pick a very narrow section of Hickok's life and then rush through it.In my opinion, not a successful movie by any standards, whether by production or historical relevence.Could be done much better with a different lead actor, without Trace Adkins and even Bruce Dern's performance seemed too staged. Not much went right about this movie.
