Excellent for historian or ship modeler
If you're interested in the technical details of the construction of warships during the late 18th century/Napoleonic Wars or are a modeler building a Royal Navy ship from that time period, this book is for you. First, although it doesn't say so in the title, this book is aimed at modelers and the author not only describes clearly the features of the ships, he also has numerous suggestions to the modeler for each on how to approach modeling any given aspect of the ships he's describing. It has many drawings, some of which are oversize and fold out, and all are extremely clear, some of the best I've seen, particularly of rigging details. In any case, if you're in the target audience for this book, you'll love it and it will go in your workshop next to your build area and will be referred to often.

Read the Book and then Visit HMS Victory!
The Ship-of-the-Line is a military work-of-art, the largest and most complex moving object of its age. "The Anatomy of Nelson's Ships" reveals that this creation is the work of masters of the art, working from their creative minds, constructing scale models, and instructing their artisans in bringing that vision into reality. Each was a one-off creation, and each was an improvement of its predecessor. The book may at first seem daunting, but the deeper one delves into it the more it reveals the even more daunting task of the shipwright, and the more one can grasp the master's touch. It is probably the best preparation for anyone anticipating a visit to Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar, the HMS Victory.

The best guide for HMS Victory model builders
Longridge really did his homework. This book is the best of three books I collected to use as guides in building a model of HMS Victory. Full of well-researched information and countless detailed illustrations, this book will serve as an invaluable guide in achieving virtually any level of detail in modeling this noteworthy ship. Combined with other books and participation in an on-line forum dedicated to modeling HMS Victory, I am fully confident that I will have the information at hand to build a very satisfying model from Heller's 1/100th scale kit.

mostly happy
yes it's the top book about the HMS Victory. it does not cover the subject I needed the most. the sails and their construction. it lightly addresses them. but mostly ignored. I would still recommend the book to anyone building a victory model. it is printed in black and white.so no color plates.

Victory Bible
I purchased this and even though it is priced abit high, I have never regretted buying it. If you are a modeler or interested in this mighty British 1st Rate, then this is the one book I would purchase. If you are building a model of the HMS Victory, this is the only book you need to build a wonderfully correct and detailed vessel. The drawings are woth the price of the book let alone the outstanding potos of the vessel itself.

Not actually that useful.
To be honest i can see what all the fuss is about, this is a guide to making a model of HMS Victory, a short Anatomy for a few pages, then straight in to the model making. the best thing about it are the folded large diagrams of the ship and its rigging...other than that there really isnt much to harp on about.

This book is written for for those looking to take on the challenge of building a museum quality version of the Victory. For those who want to increase their knowledge the book is excellent and describes in detail the most overlooked parts of the ship. The rigging is complex, this book uses the nautical terminology to go through it but it is still up to the reader to grapple with each aspect of the detail and this book helps considerably.

A must buy for modelers
This really is a beautiful book and no wonder it's been in continuous print since it was written in the 1950's. It's a must have "bible" for anyone whose thinking of building a model of this magnificent ship (or any other ship of the era). The detail is astounding and while the photos aren't a match for today's high res stuff, they're good enough. As for the line drawings-consummate brilliance..

Few other books have such claim to be the definitive work
You know when you read "so and so wrote the book on...", well Longridge did. This book is utterly superb in its coverage of "Victory", the relevant period and the model Longridge built. An absolute "must" for historians and model builders, this is the place to start.
