DELL PowerEdge 2950 Gen III 6 Bay Server 3.00Ghz X5450 Quad Core 32GB 2x73GB 15K SAS 2 PSU PERC 6/i DVD-ROM

This server had really great specs for the price and now that I've gotten it set up and installed (I'm using it as a virtualization server) it's performing really well.I did have significant troubles installing a new operating system, though. Albeit I'm not a server technician (only a lousy Computer Scientist), I had to flex nearly all of my knowledge to get this thing boot from a USB drive so I could flash a new OS onto it. The issue for me is that it would not boot from USB and it had a non-functioning DVD drive. Eventually I had to reset the BIOS and make specific changes in the BIOS after it was reset, and this eventually finessed it into successfully booting from a USB drive.I'm giving it four stars because of the non-functioning DVD drive. It doesn't affect me much, but if it's advertised, it should work. That being said, I definitely would buy another one of these if I had the need. Especially now that I know the secret to the sauce.As the other reviews noted, the server is loud. That much is expected from a server like this. If you need something quieter, go with a consumer-grade tower rather than this.It was packaged very well and arrived undamaged, which is in itself a miracle since UPS is nearly negligent in delivering packages to my address. That, if anything, speaks to how well it was packaged.

The unit arrived very quickly, packed well and in great condition.I installed both Windows 2012 server and CentOS Linux version 7. with no issues whatsoever.I opened it up to check the "internals" and was very surprised to see extremely clean, like new condition.I decided it was such a great value, I quickly ordered a second unit with more disks and memory.I'm thrilled with both systems.

Definitely love it so far!Update: Installed and configured esxi 6.0, upgraded the hard drives to larger capacity drives, runs all my virtual machines no problem, very fast. Have also used it experimentally for firewall software which it also ran no problem. As another review stated, it is an incredibly loud machine! If you are not planning on keeping it in some remote network/storage closet it may not be for you. My only regret is not buying two.

I would definitely give 5 stars but of course it is not perfect. I bought this one to install XENserver at home and replicate my work environment. A little too noisy for my GF but hey. The only thing that sucks is that I did not have the password for the pre installed windows server and I would have loved to keep it. Also it came installed on raid 0 instead of raid 1 so I was not able to keep one drive just in case I wanted to try it later.Definitely a good buy!

This item works very well, however something not posted in the other reviews or anywhere in the item description is how incredibly loud it is. When it first powers on, you would think you were listening to a small jet engine that just started. This is not quiet like a regular computer. And it is not due to any lack of housing. We have it mounted and in a room separate from the main part of the house with custom made housing and I can still hear it and feel the sound resonating throughout the house. So that is something that definitely should be taken into consideration when you are considering this purchase. Other than the noise level, this works perfectly. We are using it as a Minecraft host server, have 9 servers running on it constantly and no issues at all. It came very well packaged and very quickly. So five stars for the seller really, but had to post four because of the noise.
