Excellent step by step instructions with a well-defined - if limited - scope
I found this to be the best step-by-step tutorial introduction I've ever used. The book is extremely precise and clear on what to do, step by step. It shows expected results. It takes nothing for granted. The associated files let you do each lesson "stand alone". So while all the lessons take you through the construction of a single (simplistic) travel agency website, you aren't "stuck" if you don't finish a lesson or you messed up a prior lesson. They even include "finished" files to show you what your work will look like when properly completed.When things went "wrong" and I didn't get the result shown I could always go back and find the error - and invariably it would be mine. I find introductory tutorials that have subtle mistakes, or are half a version behind the product VERY frustrating, so I really appreciated the attention to detail in this book. I usually fill the margins of training books with errors and edits of unclear sentences. I found less than a dozen unclear places in this book - and several were simply where they gave only the MAC menu choice ("choose") rather than also including the Windows "OK" command.I have virtually NO current experience with HTML, though in the past I've done serious C programming. I agree with another reviewer - you don't need to be a coder to use DreamWeaver, but it sure helps. Dreamweaver is a tool that generates code. There is a VERY complex set of dependencies between .CSS .HTML and .JS files in various directories to make a site work. Dreamweaver lets you flip between designer view and code view - and this book even lightly introduces you to that world. In a week, this book got me started using Dreamweaver well enough to build two web sites from scratch. HOWEVER, this book alone was not enough to do everything I wanted on those sites. Once this book had given me a mental model of how Dreamweaver works, I switched over to using "Dreamweaver CS4 - The Missing Manual" (McFarland). I've found that to be the perfect companion for serious work.Full disclosure - I finished the entire CIB book (11 lessons) in 8 days, spending about 3 to 4 hours per day. About 3/4 of the way through the CIB lessons I started using the "Missing Manual" book to read more about threads of special interest to me - like preparing photos for web use. However I never needed to use outside resources to figure out what CIB was trying to teach.The Classroom In a Book is VERY basic in what it covers. It does NOT wander off into details about anything - this meant I could actually complete the book in a reasonable time and get a broad view. If I could change one thing, it would be to add about 5 chapters. It would be extremely valuable to go back over the site created and "tune" it, adding features and making it more real-world, including things like nesting <div>s, integrating graphics, formatting tables, creating page layout using CSS, and perhaps even setting up formmail. These lessons would help complete and cement one's understanding of how you use the Dreamweaver toolset to build real websites.This book will NOT make you a web guru, or even fully qualified to build a real-world site. But you have to start somewhere, and I found this book to be the IDEAL starting point. If I ever write another users training manual, I will use this one as a model.

Another wonderful Adobe Classroom In A Book Learning Experience
This clearly written logically organized book explains in no nonsense terms some of the key concepts in using Adobe Dreamweaver. Lessons from the source is the best way to learn about web design software. In eleven (11) important lessons, the Adobe Classroom in a Book training teams takes the reader through Dreamweaver's essential design interface. The book includes a "Quickstart" chapter for those who want to jump right in and start designing web pages. Eleven chapters later, the book discusses publishing on the web.So weather you're looking for a Quick Start or a primer on everything from Cascading Style Sheets (Chapter 2) or Lessons about working with text and graphics, this book could be the introduction you're looking for. Some of the other topics include: Working with Navigation (Chapter 5); Adding Interactivity (Chapter 6); Creating a Page Layout (Chapter 7); Working with Forms (Chapter 8); Working with Flash (Chapter 9); Increasing Productivity (Chapter 10); and, finally, Publishing to the Web (Chapter 11).By the time you finish reading this book, you'll have an understanding of the interface and web page design concepts of using Adobe Dreamweaver.

Great Overview of DW CS4
This is a neat little book. it's hardly a one-stop shopping trip to all things Dreamweaver, but it's a very solid approach to getting started. Admittedly, I have some background in this, but I sat down and read the thing cover-to-cover, all at once and understood every concept without doing the actual lessons (I'll go back and do them later with someone in my studio who is just getting started). The fact that it's very colorful is nice. Most of the rest of the CS4 Classroom in a Book series has many inspirational examples of creative uses of the Adobe products (clever photos, illustrations, designs, motion graphics, etc). This book's examples are not all that sexy. But, if they were a little jazzier I would have rated it as 5 stars. I guess if you knew absolutely nothing about web design and development this Dreamweaver book might not be for you, but Dreamweaver is popular with professionals so maybe it is expected that it's readers might not be among the entry-level users.

Good but cookie cutter
I honestly only got through the first chapter of this book. I was so eager to get it and realized that I didn't want to be dependent on the program to do the coding for me. So instead I went out and got a CSS book where it taught me more of a foundation. This book was very cookie cutter and didn't explain too throughly what you were doing and why for some of the processing. To me is a was a color by number type of book.I recommend this book to those who have never ever opened dreamweaver and don't know how to get started.It gives you an idea but to do indepth thing I didn't think it helped as much.

Adobe Dreamweaver CS4
I am very glad I bought this book. I have been enrolled in a graphic web design class since March of 2010 (it ends in July of 2010) for the purposes of building my Professional Development company. I desperately needed extra practice, because I did not desire to slow down the pace of the class. With this book, I have been practicing lessons at my own pace. Anything I do not fully understand, I can continue doing until I completely understand the process. Each lesson can act as a stand-alone tutorial, or be done in its entirety. I have nearly completed all of the lessons; I look forward to learning how to post websites through Dreamweaver (chapter 11). Using this book, I am quite confident I will get a professional, interactive site that will get a lot of traffic. I strongly recommend this book!

using dreamweaver cs4
I have found this a helpful book and have used it as intended,working through the lessons provided on the CD. I have previously used Dreamweaver MX 2004 but found the layout in the new version quite different so wanted a book to guide me through the changes. I have limited webdesign experience and have learned a lot, particularly about CSS sheets which I will definitely use more in future. I think that a complete beginner might find a few problems using the book as some of the instructions are slightly off and it took me a while to sort out what they meant.However I would recommend it overall and I think that it is also a book I will find useful later as a reference book because it has a good index.Well done to Adobe for getting it out so quickly.

Very good introduction and reference.
Having bitten the bullet and spent great piles of cash on CS4 Web Premium, I wanted to get up and running quickly. I had some projects in mind but with so much power available, how do you get a feel for what it can do and where to start?I worked through the lessons and picked up skills and learnt about tools and options. I also had a good grounding for going on to learn more.I also bought the Fireworks, Flash and Action Script versions of this book. Same story.Of course you also have the lesson materials to use as components in your own projects, learning how to change them to produce the effect you are after.

Easy to follow but too brief.
This book is short and brief however its easy to follow and would be suitable for beginners. If you want indepth knowledge of Dreamweaver CS4 this is not the book.
