$5.98 Ep: Garage Days Re-Revisited

A decent sounding reissue on a multitude of formats both new and old!
I won't go into my subjective opinion of the songs on this EP, I will merely concentrate my opinions on the merits of this reissue. After being deleted for many years: it's nice to have this back in print. 2nd hand originals on CD or Vinyl are expensive and whilst all the tracks were included on the easily obtainable 'Garage Inc ' compilation; it's nice to have them as a standalone re-release of the original Garage days re-revisited EP.What of the sound quality? Is it worthwhile buying this affordable 're-release' over seeking out the aforementioned 1987 release based on sonics? Thankfully it is. I would imagine this version being understandably a bit louder than the originals, yet this 2018 mastering is very far from the 'Loudness War' casualty that St Anger and Death Magnetic are, I only have the 'mastered for ITunes ' version at the time of writing, yet I am impressed with the sound, much more dynamic and detailed than the same tracks as featured on the Garage Inc compilation. Whilst I have never heard the original release on CD or Vinyl: I am more than happy enough with the sound to not want to spend upwards of £25 in the 2nd hand market for a near mint original on CD.Does it aesthetically resemble the original closely enough? From scans I have seen, it appears that the original artwork has been faithfully restored for the vinyl and cassette versions, although I believe the CD comes in a cardboard slip cover and not a standard plastic style case with inlay card as the original CD did (others may correct me if I'm wrong). It's also worth noting that the confusing array of formats (CD, CD in old US style 'longbox', regular vinyl, orange coloured vinyl, cassette, download and streaming) are strange considering this is merely an EP originally viewed as a minor release. Yet this shows a level of effort has been out into this re-release, how odd that a cassette should be released in 2018 even if only a 'tribute' to the old format. In conclusion: A decent sounding reissue that should please all but the devout collector who wishes to have the original.Update 15/04/18. It would appear that the aforementioned dynamic sound is not to be found on the CD versions of this reissue. Only the Mastered for iTunes, Vinyl, cassette and High Resolution downloads from Metallica's own site have the sound in a decent (moderate amount of compression) quality. Should such things be of concern to you?
