Student Success in College, (Includes New Preface and Epilogue): Creating Conditions That Matter

Dig a little deeper
The authors make it clear in the beginning that the 20 universities cited as examples of schools doing it right are not neccesarily the most prestigious or successful schools in the nation. OK, I get it. Some were selected because their grad rates exceeded what their student characteristics might have predicted. However, shouldn't there be some minimal threshold before a university is cited for their best practices? I went to collegeresults.org and looked at some of the universities' 6 year grad rates....30% for some of the schools cited. What were they expecting ... 0%. Also, I looked at individual programs highlighted at different universities. Some of the programs serve such a low number of students it is doubtful there is enough evidence to make any prediction or correlation to student success. This makes me wonder how much they investigated the reality of each program before putting it up for display. (Fayetteville State University SSS TRIO program... Their participants photo was not much larger than a family reunion gathering.)However, as a practioner in this area, one thing is clear to me - at least one of these authors is very knowledgeable about the issues involved in successfully educating a more diverse population. There are gems of advice sprnkled throughout the text that ring true and are authentic. There are valuable insights provided throughout many of the chapters.I am a little concerned about only six reviews for a book with at least 4 authors. Maybe the reviews should be reviewed...or maybe I am just grumpy today.

Super Useful
This book has easily been one of my favorite grad school reads. I plan on using it in as a SA professional. It reads very quickly and provides a compilation of helpful case studies of "DEEP Schools" and the variables that help them effectively engage their students.

Documenting effective educational practice
In depth explaination of DEEP project schools. The book is a little outdated as I think two of the schools referred to in the book have closed down. Overall, good way of adopting good teaching pedagogies.

Excellent
Very user friendly. I am planning on using these Universities as a jumping start to where I want to start as a student affairs professional.

Three Stars
This book is a good survey of research on student success, but it needs to be updated.

At a glance...
Unfortunately, I lost this book before I read it. But it looked fabulous. I will have to purchase it again.
