While the Gaiwan looks great, there seems to be a problem with the manufacturing of the bowl. It’s not perfectly symmetrical. While undetectable to the eye, a simple measurement will indicate that the diameter of the bowl is not the same all the way around. It’s probably an issue with the mold that produces the bowl. To explain simply, it’s as if the bowl was held between two fingers and ever so slightly squeezed before the firing process so that it became slightly oval. The problem with this issue is that the lid does not sit flat on top of the bowl and falls at an angle into the bowl. If you balance the lid flatly on top of the bowl, you can clearly see the gaps between the lid and the bowl. I ordered a replacement to see if this was a fluke, but unfortunately it wasn’t. The second one also had this exact problem. If you plan on actually using this Gaiwan, I would suggest getting something else.

If you are buying this to use in Gaiwan tea ceremony or to pour into other vessels for any reason it's not ideal. It pours sloppily and the lid maintains the surface tension of the tea and holds a big air pocket even when slid to the side making it even more sloppy when pouring.If you are just buying it to drink directly out of or for decoration it's good sturdy ceramic and it looks really nice the glaze is a good color. The design painted on it is as nice looking as in the photos.If you are buying specifically for tea ceremony I'd look elsewhere.

Very beautiful cups, really love them. I recently purchased two more, as the first I owned unfortunately the saucer broke. My fiance and I love these and honestly the art on them is far better and brighter in person. Absolutely would buy more.

I liked my Chinese tea cup that came with a lid and a saucer. The inside of the bowl even has a little fish that I find charming. Great quality and of good thickness porcelain.

This covered teacup completed a tea set for me. Not only is it a lovely light blue-green color but the hand painted images of a koi fish and a lotus blossom are very calming. It takes you to a Japanese garden with a pool. The teacup is exquisite.

Very cute , it will be used often. Shipping box needs to be sturdier . I'm very surprised it got here in one piece. Nevertheless it's quite pretty.

They are small, but that's what I like about them.
