Embarrassment of Riches
These recordings effortlessly demonstrate the embarrassment of riches that Jamaican music has to offer. This particular release was not recorded as an 'album'; rather, it is a collection of superb singles, all originally released on the Micron record label. Like all great singles, each song is memorable and easily stands up under repeated listening. Some of the highlights: a couple of great I-Roy dub/toasts, Junior Byles' 'Lorna Banana', 'Black Organ' by Blacker Black, some fabulous King Tubby mixes, and a couple of rocking Tommy McCook instrumentals. There are several exciting rarities. For example, I'm completely unfamiliar with a group called the Defenders. I've never encountered any other of their other recordings, but if 'Our Rights' is indicative, they surely must have died and gone to reggae heaven. What's to like about it? Beautiful vocal harmonies, chugging rhythm, and jazzy guitar (dig that suspended, stop-time intro). Honestly, this entire record demands to be listened to, and listened to often.

so I decided to try it out and was not disappointed. The music is excellent - not at all ...
I am just starting to explore the world of Jamaican music, and found this double LP brand new in my local store. The price was low, so I decided to try it out and was not disappointed. The music is excellent - not at all watered down or overly 'pop' - with some very trippy dub versions included alongside the main versions. Mastering is very good and the vinyl pressing is very low-noise.
