All the protection you need and some you don't
I'll start by saying I'm a pretty clumsy person and that I find myself dropping my phone at least once a day - this has stood up to the abuse without so much as a hiccup. It has landed on everything from gravel to concrete to asphalt to hardwood floors and even falling down a flight of stairs and landing about 10 feet down the stairwell without incident. Cases can be as protective as you need them to be and many are available for more money that provide better protection, but for your average person this is perfect. The case is very easy to take on and off, only requires a minute or so - there are three latches on each side of the case and you don't need to fully take it apart, you can just open it up halfway and slide the phone right out. The inner shell is made up of hard plastic with a screen protector built in, and the whole phone is sealed up in the case. It's not waterproof, but feel free to splash as much as you want on there, have been wiping mine down with alcohol wipes and even heavy duty antiseptic wipes after every shift in the ER without any signs of damage to the screen protector. The outside is a rubbery shell that allows you to get a good grip on the phone, feels very stable in my hand. I drove away from the hockey rink two weeks ago with my phone on the roof and took a couple of quick turns and when I went back to look for my phone in the parking lot and on the road I found it still on top of my car. So that's something. Again, handles antiseptic and alcohol wipes without any damage. Not much more to say about a rubber shell though I suppose.Overall this makes the phone heavier and bulkier, but if you're worried about those things and don't need to be constantly wipe your phone down there are other options. Realistically, all you need in an everyday case is something to protect the edges for the occasional drop and that can be had for $10 any mall on the planet at this point.I previously owned the Commuter (the midrange which has a reverse design with a hard outer shell and a soft inner shell), and for those trying to make up their minds between the two I can shed some light. I felt like the Commuter was protecting my phone well and it did survive some pretty substantial falls, but the amount of effort that is required to install/remove the case is utterly ridiculous. You have to bend the hard plastic to get the case off which is just begging for trouble. After about five months of exclusively keeping that case on I bought a battery case, and after four or five times of switching cases I broke the plastic. Could it be because I'm clumsy? Absolutely! But I'd expect better quality from Otterbox. I've previously owned a Commuter for my Droid X and the Defender for my iPad 2 and with the exception of a crack that I put into my Droid X case when it wasn't on the phone they performed very well. If you're between the two and all that's keeping you from buying this is the extra money just spend the money and go for this one, you'll be glad you did. This case does come at a semi-high price, so if you're looking for something cheap and you aren't worried about durability or quality I'd look elsewhere. If you're willing to spend the extra money for a quality product and you need something that will protect your phone from your ham-fisted, clumsy ways this is one of the best options out there.

OtterBox Defender for iPhone 5 - Punk
Overall, I am pleased with my purchase. The case is well made and fits the iPhone 5 like a glove. I was particularly pleased that the AUX jack was unobstructed. In fact, the case has an 'O' molded around the AUX hole which should accommodate some of the fatter cables.I've had the case on my phone for the past week. These are some of my gripes thus far.1) Sheer size of the case. One of the things I loved about the iPhone was how slim it was. This case literally doubles the thickness of your phone. This is because there are essentially two cases on the phone now. More specifically, there is a plastic case that fits snugly around the phone (on the Punk case it is the 'yellow' part) and then there is a rubber case that goes around the plastic case (on the Punk case it is the blue part).2) Vibrate/Sound toggle switch obstructed. On the iPhone 5, there is a little switch on the top left hand size (if you are looking at the screen) that toggles sound. This feature was particularly useful when I forgot to silence my phone in a meeting or a movie. If the phone rang, I just slipped my hand into my pocket and flip the switch, none the wiser. The case obstructs the switch and now it can only be reached by pulling back a little rubber tab. This operation will require two hands to perform. At least, it does for me.3) Home button is more difficult to press. The power/lock button and the volumes buttons work just like before. But the home button is now more difficult to press. This is not a deal breaker per say but considering that IOS is designed to be operated by one finger, this is something worth mentioning. (e.g. Double press home button to task kill, return to home screen, etc.)4) Little rubber flap over the charging port won't stay inNow I know this is a very stupid gripe but I wanted to share it. There is a little rubber flap, at the bottom of the phone, that protects the charging port. (Mostly from dust I suppose.) After charging the phone, the flap is suppose to re-seat back into the case and sit flush with the bottom of the phone, covering the port. Well, it doesn't do that. The little rubber ridge on the flap doesn't catch on to the case very well so it pops back out. I imagine at some point it will get caught with the lining of a pocket or something. I may just end up cutting it off. I know this is hard to explain in text but hopefully you get the idea.Changing gears... There are a few positives I didn't expect.1) The build in screen protector does NOT hurt functionality.Simply stated, the touch screen works just as good as before the case was on it. Responsive and such.2) The cameras (front and back) are NOT obstructed.Self explanatory.3) Call quality is NOT affected. Both myself and the person on the other end of my call can't notice a difference in sound quality with the case on/off. Also, the phone's speaker is not obstructed.Overall, I'd recommend this case to anyone. It is sturdy and I feel confident a drop, from a reasonable height, will not hurt my phone. Which is the reason I bought a case in the first place

Most rugged case I've ever had... Period
I won't lie, I'm using cases from Decalgirl right now because I can get custom designs. That is something I enjoy. Also, I did find Otterbox had a bit of a lacking in colours. Outside of that, I have nothing but praise for the Defender series. I have actually lost phones after buying something other than an Otterbox Defender. This is a very rugged case. It's kind of a pain to get on and the soft cladding did wear and break in places after a while but... well, here's a story: My brother had the same case. He was in a rush getting into his car and accidentally left his case on the roof. He noticed after he saw it fly off the roof and bounce off the highway. The phone was just fine. This is the case for you if you are in a highly physical job or have butterfingers like me.

We keep coming back to the defenders
I seem to keep coming back to the otter box defender series when it comes to protecting expensive iPhones for my teenagers. The peace of mind I have, (and they have as a result of my peace of mind) is worth the slight extra thickness. You won't have to worry about drops or crushing it or anything of the sort that teens might do

The best phone protector!
I ordered this for my son, as he is very hard on his phone. He got a new iphone 5 and I didn't want it to get a cracked screen like his previous phone. He put the otter box on and it actually came with a belt clip (which I didn't expect). After a call, he can clip his phone into the belt clip screen side in for further protection when he is on the job site.

Hardy case
I worked in construction for a bit and was concerned my phone wouldn’t make it. So I got this case and it did the trick. It does feel bulky and the touch screen isn’t as responsive, but if you are looking for durability it will definitely deliver.
