A Treasury of Ibn Taymiyyah: His Timeless Thought and Wisdom (Treasury in Islamic Thought and Civilization, 4)

Not a treasury of Ibn Taymiyyah
The title gives the impression that the book would contain selected writings of Ibn Taymiyyah. So I ordered it with that expectation, only to be disappointed to find that it is rather a series of articles, each one of which is written by the present author (Mustapha Sheikh). Each article begins with a quote from Ibn Taymiyyah, which is sometimes as short as one line, then the author writes his commentary, rather his personal reflections, on that theme. From what he writes, it is not possible to say, except perhaps in few cases, which of the opinions he expresses are supported by Ibn Taymiyyah since he neither provides any citations nor any clarity to that effect. In fact some of the opinions he expresses would be farthest from the minds of Ibn Taymiyyah, that is to a reader who is familiar with the works of Ibn Taymiyyah. It is perfectly acceptable to write commentaries on a quote by a classic scholar, but the author must write with clarity so that the reader knows which opinions belong to the classic scholar and which ones to the present author himself. And such a work should be titled accordingly. In this case, this title, unfortunately, is deceptive. It is surprising that the editors of a well-know publishers like Kube Publishing (Islamic Foundation) would present this deceptive title to the readers. It does not reflect well on them.
