Bjorling on top form
This CD used to be called "Songs in Swedish" (released in 1996), and of the many (nearly 50) CDs of Bjorling that I have, I find myself returning to this one most often. Bjorling was intending to re-record all of his old Swedish repertoire that he had first had issued on 78 rpm records in the 1930s and 1940s. Although the project was never completed, the surviving pieces - in a mixture of mono and stereo - show Bjorling at his most relaxed and insightful.Songs by Alfven sit with others by Sjoberg, Sibelius and even Beethoven, but the star of the piece is surely Jussi's peerless rendition of the Cantique de Noel by Adolphe Adam. It might seem strange to recommend a Swedish version of this, but, in the same way that his rendition of the Pearl Fishers' duet with Robert Merrill is STILL the best version after more than half-a-century, there is surely no better recording of this piece. The second verse would, as they say, bring tears to a glass eye. We play this (turned up loud) to welcome Christmas each year, and once you've heard it, the likelihood is that you will do so too.I can't recommend this disc too highly. Get a copy if you can.

i have always loved his La boheme with Beecham
A superb cd of Jussi singing in his native Swedish. i have always loved his La boheme with Beecham, above all others. But, like another reviewer i heartily agree, this recording of Swedish songs is something to return to again and again. As Victoria de Los Angeles said in her autobiographyNone of Jussi's recordings captured the true beauty of his voice. He was an unbeaten arm wrestler too, having partly funded his living expenses at music college by challenging Dockworkers to arm wrestling matches.Jussi beat Errol Flyn too!

Jussi Bjorling
Bjorling's voice is unsurpassed in its crystalline, unsentimental quality, and yet it produces a nostalgia that I think no other voice does.
