Cleared up our sneezing and stuffy noses....
So we have now owend our BreatheSmart for about 2 months. My wife and I couldn't be happier. We live in a high rise building and have about 1200sq ft. We have placed the unit in such a way that it can pull the air from both large rooms at the same time. We noticed after only a few days how the amount of dust on the furniture diminished . My wife and I also had been having nose congestion and blowing our noses to no end for a few months, we think because of the dust. After about a week, no more sneezing, and after about 3 weeks, no more congestion. We have the unit running 24hours a day. I do notice in the early morning hours that the status light does go to blue, lowest setting, so I know that the sensor is definitely working. You do need to make sure to check and clean the PREFILTER about every 10 days , depending upon your situation. I just take a Dustbuster type vacuum and clean it in about 3 minutes. This is a MUST. I also invested in the better filter to capture more particles like mold, just to be sure. No, we don't have mold, already tested for that. It was worth it to me. After spending this much for the system, another $50 for a better filter was a no-brainer. Don't skimp on the heart of the system, the filter. No, its not overly noisy. If you want it to work, then it has to make some noise. If it really bothers you then take it off of automatic and drop the speed down a notch. I give it a 5 star rating and would recommend it to anyone in the same situation.

My husband has a breathing issue. Which is why I was willing to "get what you pay for".
Like that it is quiet. Im not happy with the cost and cost of future filters. That dust seems to accumulate even in areas close to the machine within just a few days. I had a less expensive one that seems to have done as well.

Cleaner Air
I've bought this product over a year ago and absolutely love it! This air purifier runs everyday 24/7 and has helped greatly in reducing our allergies during allergy season and keeping down dog dander (we have 5 dogs, all shed). We also have a wood burning stove we use during the winter. The noise level is quiet, but as the filter becomes really dirty then the machine becomes noisier. Noise level returns to normal when the filter is replaced. We just replaced our filter, it lasted us a little over a year before it changed to yellow. One of the best purchases I've made in a long time!

works as advertised
I bought the Alen BreatheSmart Customizable Air Purifier with HEPA-Silver and the Dylos DC1100-PRO-PC Air Quality Monitor/Particle Counter. The Dylos, as far as I could determine is the only affordable counter which exceeds most/all other affordable counter on the small particle level. At $319 the the Dylos ins't cheap, but I wanted to insure that the Alen product was actually cleaning the air. Together the purchases are approx $1K total. My preliminary report is that the Dylos and Alen products both work as advertised, albeit how the measure particulates may differ and all that I can say is that the devices correlate with a measure of air quality, but because of the technology differences, as well as units of measure being different, it is beyond my needs/concerns to attempt to convert the units.Roughly speaking then, when the Alen device says the air is clean, the Dylos agrees with reported measurements as low as in the 30's for small particulates and single digits for large.I run the Alen device a few hours at the highest speed before bed time where the unit sits in a large master bedroom, then dial it back to mid level when during sleep. The units noise level is acceptable white noise background much like a fan.The charcoal filter works, because there is a noticeable difference from the bed room to the a joining rooms where I never noticed a smell in the past. The Alen quality 'meter' is simply three colors of red yellow and blue. Apparently, the meter is very sensitive, because just opening the door will change the meter from blue to yellow which will also correspond to a rise in the Dylos to the triple digit level around 150 when the Alen is yellow..When first using the Dylos the air quality was over 1000 for small particles, then changing the furnace filter to a MERV 11 brought it down to the 180 level. But my wife wants the windows open so the measurement would jump to the 450 level. We are having the ducts cleaned this weekend and I'll replace the filter with a MERV 13. That should take care of the general house and I'll use the Alen device only in the bedroom. Will report other interesting things as I notice them.-- a day later --Our furnace cannot handle a MERV 13 filter. It is too dense for it, and cannot pull enough air through it to cool our house. That is why you see comments that a better filter isn't always better. We went back to a MERV 11 with the Alen device used only in the master bedroom and I have been able to sleep. Problem with the bedroom is that the input duct is right above the bed, making the Alen unit required to keep the air at a 'clean' level. Each situation (home/person/room/allergy) is so different, making these reviews difficult to apply to your situation. That said, I'm finding that the Alen unit works as verified by the Dylos unit, and better sleep.

Noticeably improved air quality
I've only had this air purifier running for about a day, but I've already noticed an improvement in my breathing.**Assembly**This thing was super easy to unbox and put together. The box sort of unfolds upwards and you don't need to struggle with a bunch of tape and glued together bits. Everything slides out easily. You only need to remove 3 parts from the box, put in the filter and then pop the front face on. There'a a very well-labeled handle and the unit is not particularly heavy**Use**A plastic decal on the top explains all the functions. Easiest thing to do is just pop it onto Auto and let the sensor do all the work.*Effectiveness*As someone with allergies and asthma, I'm pretty sensitive to air quality issues. Unfortunately, my home has air quality issues and my previous hepa filter just wasn't doing the trick. As soon as i turned on the new filter, the Red sensor light told me that the unit was detecting poor air quality. YMMV, but wIthin a few hours i was noticing an improvement in air quality and my ability to breathe easy. We'll see how things are after a week or so, but it's already looking pretty promising.

Kind of Strange, Box Was Beaten Up.
This is an expensive item and i was a little taken aback that the box was so badly battered. Then to make matters even stranger, the item came without a manual. Im hoping it keeps working without issue.
