Encyclopedia Brown Gets His Man

Managed to get four gotchas, two halves. The rest, didn’t get. Still a good challenge to beat Encyclopedia Brown. However, when it comes to Leroy Brown’s exclamations, one should get real in any dialogue, especially among kids. “Hopping hamburgers” just won’t cut it. Doubt seriously the Hardy Boys would be caught dead saying them. Still, a fun read puzzlers.

My son, who is now in his thirties, loved this series! I saved his books and passed them on to my 11 year old grandson! My grandson has just about read everyone of the series this summer! Encyclopedia Brown is his absolute favorite as well. Sure glad I SAVED THEM!

I love Encyclopedia Brown and have done so since I was a tot in the 1970s. However, these books, at $5.99 for the Kindle version, take me about 20 minutes, each book, to read. This is too expensive. They should be bundled at a lower per-book rate or something.

I really love the Encyclopedia Brown Books. I really enjoy seeing them on the Kindle and they are fun little puzzler stories to read to my kids and see if they can solve them. Can't say enough how enjoyable the logic that some of the thinking that goes on with these stories is great teaching tool for my kids as well.So why the two star listing? Well the formatting sucks and sucks harder than a brand new Hoover vacuum on a shag carpet. There is no link between the solution and the story nor the next story in the series. So you have either have to create a link to the solutions individually for each of the or create a link to the solutions chapter and then flip back to the stories. This is an issue that nearly all of the Penguin Ebook editions published today have had. It is annoying and aggravating since this should have been something easily created when the book was originally ported over to an ebook standard. I mean I have seen self-published books in similar genres that have hot links going back and forth between solutions or maps or appendices over to the main text. So that is why the two star listing.

I like to read the stories and see if I can solve them before looking at the solution in the back.

Another fantastic Encyclopedia Brown book. It follows the same format of mystery & then the answer in the back. My 9yr old can't get enough of these books and reads the entire book without stopping. He loves trying to figure out how Encyclopedia solves the mystery. Great book for 1st-4th grade boys.

My son is reading these in order from the very beginning and he is LOVING it. These are books he can read completely alone in 3rd grade and stories he can cruise through. He loves trying to figure out the clues with Encyclopedia!

おなじみEncyclopedia Browndシリーズの第４巻です。第１巻へのレビューで、「産まれて初めて英語の本を読了できた」旨を書きましたが、小生はその後第５巻までを順調に読破することができました。同工異曲とはいえ、それぞれに面白く、飽きることなく読ませてくれます。「Harry Potterに挫折した人に」お勧めという印象は第１巻と変りません。本書の構成は、シリーズの他の本と同じく、10の短編の連作となっています。それぞれに謎解きの問題（なぜ嘘をついているとわかるか？など）が設定されていて、巻末に答えがまとめて載せられています。英語教材として本書を読む人が多いと思いますが、内容理解度の把握用にこの「謎解き」が使えるので、小生は全てのなぞを「できるだけ解けるように考える」ことにしています。中には自然科学の知識がないと解けないような謎もあるので全てを解けるわけではありませんが、謎を解く努力の過程で、英文精読の習慣が自然につけられるのがメリットです。また、謎に関係なさそうな部分はさっさと速読するというメリハリもつけられます。本シリーズの読みやすさについては既に多くの人が言及されていますが、その理由の一つとして、本書が事実と会話の記述に終始して、心理描写などはほとんどないこともあげられると思います。主人公Brown少年の相棒は、「学年中でもっともかわいい（しかし喧嘩も強い）女の子」という、なかなか魅力的なキャラクターです。10歳の男の子ともなれば相手への淡い恋心くらいは持ちそうなものですが、そのような色っぽい話題は まったく ありません。したがって、本格的な小説を読むようなわけにはいきませんが、それでもとにかく「英語の本が読了できた」という自信はつきました。この巻では、Brownの宿敵Bugsが、Brownに対抗して「探偵」として逆襲（？）してきます。お楽しみに。

有名なEncyclopedia Brownシリーズなので、細かい事は言う必要ないでしょう。出てくるキャラクターはお馴染みの人も何人かいて、そろそろ読者の頭の中にも入って来ている頃でしょう。このシリーズは是非とも数冊読んで英語の本を読むことが楽しくなるのを経験して欲しいと思います。現役高校生くらいの英語力があれば結構読めるレベルだと思います。
