Walking in Menorca: 20 day routes and round the island (Cicerone Guide) Paperback – January 30, 2014

The usual Cicerone high standard, but probably not the book for a casual walker. A good guide for the long distance trails, but the day walks were quite long, and no means of return. More circular walks would have been good. Some of the directions were vague, especially those for finding the beginning of the walks. Though the routes are well waymarked, the start of the routes from the towns/resorts are not, making this vagueness a serious pitfall. Some landmarks would have been useful here. For example, the directions for the start of the walk from Son Bou to Cala Galdana were quite misleading, and since no indication of distance is given between the various instructions, walkers may travel quite a long way before they realise they have gone the wrong way. (For example,the turning required to reach the start of the walk above is not down a wide road to the left, as stated, but more of a parking/service area. It is also before a very large and prominent hotel, which would have been a very valuable landmark, especially since the wide road that turns left after it, also ends in a footpath - but it's the wrong one. The author mentions going over a concrete bridge, but is this in 10 metres or several kilometres? Knowing this could have saved us a long walk down the wrong path). Sometimes the language is not quite clear, for example using the words "turn left" when really meaning, "the road turns to the left" - not major, but it could be if you are looking for a left turn, and with no distances indicated, it would be easy to take a left turn if there should be one beyond the bend in the road. More information on features seen along the way would be of interest and enhance the book considerably.

Good advice, compact book, light weight.

The book looks & reads excellently. In 2 weeks time I will be able to put it into practice & then I will really know its worth but so far very impressed.
