NeverEnding Story - Original Soundtrack: Expanded

If you liked the movie just like I did then you will certainly enjoy this soundtrack. It has all the songs from the movie. Would recommend this album.

Very cool soundtrack, got it as this film is one of my favourites. Came in good time.

The original song from 1984 (the 80's are still the best decade of music IMHO) opens the album, and is the outstanding track from the film of course, and who could dislike this mix of "electropop" with a very pleasant melody. Leaving aside the rest of the film tracks, which are pleasant enough, tracks 16 to 20 are the real "raison d'etre" of this extended collector's edition i.e. the remixes. All 5 have their merits, and everyone will have their favourite. Me? I like them all. Outstanding work! You will not be disappointed.....

Love how this comes in a sleeve like an lp, the songs of the film are a memory refreshed. Having a companion like Falcor through times of bullying, revisiting friends thought lost, being a part of fantasy through Bastian and Atreyu. These tracks capture the very essence of the film glad to own this neverending story

The NeverEnding Story is catnip for late Gen X-ers, even those sneering behind vintage Nirvana t-shirts. The NeverEnding Story is up there with seminal 80s family movies like The Goonies that continue to dig up a sense of nostalgia as our cohort sails into middle age. This reissued soundtrack is a reminder of familiar musical themes that filled us with wonder, joy, and utter sadness during a child's relatable journey to self discovery and how to be brave during a time of loss and helplessness.The film's score, co-composed by Giorgio Moroder and Klaus Doldinger is a collection of unique and memorable motifs. This is unusual for a kid's movie, which generally recycles themes, but the music from The NeverEnding Story is composed of a series of individualized pieces, perhaps due to multiple composers bringing their own styles into the mix. Moroder (coming off of the synth-heavy, 80s flavored score for Scarface) offers modern, electronic flavors, versus Doldinger's more traditional orchestral style. Moroder's "Ivory Tower" elicits Vangelis Blade Runner vibes, while Doldinger's "Bastian's Happy Flight" is a decidedly more traditional, sweeping piece one would expect from a fantasy film score. After having not heard the score (or seen the film) for quite a long time, listening to this disc reminded me of how expertly the duo was able to draw the listener's emotions from pits of sadness to soaring levels of joy (as the film's plot emphasizes). What was even more impressive is how two composers were able to intertwine their styles in a seamless way to create a consistent emotional arc.But why you're really here is for Limahl's legendary theme song, "The NeverEnding Story". Even as a fan of the film going back to its release in 1984, it had sort of faded from my memory, until season 3 of Stranger Things, featuring the theme in a thoroughly unexpected and heartfelt scene that had me cheering like a kid. The show's writers ingeniously resurrected the song, and hit me (and I suspect an army of Gen X-ers) right in the feels. "The NeverEnding Story" was one of the best pop songs of the 80s, and as a film song effectively captured the spirit of the material it supported far more than a majority of songs written for cinema. It's melodic, magical, with lyrics that drive home the point of the film.This remastered and expanded soundtrack has been beautifully restored, with the score sounding fuller and less brittle compared with the original German CD pressing. There's a better sense of presence and spaciality in this new edition, which makes it worthy of an upgrade if you happen to own the original CD. Limahl's theme sounds a bit less upgraded, but still improved. A number of remixes of "The NeverEnding Story" have been included, and while they're superfluous for a majority of buyers, I did enjoy the extended cuts. The bonus tracks manage to sound a notch better than the original cut. Of note, the final track is a French language version of the theme. I expected this to be somewhat of a throwaway novelty, but it's actually my favorite of the bonus tracks. The song really works well in French, with the translated lyrics beautifully flowing with the melody.I'm not a fan of the packaging. While the disc itself is completely black - front and back - to replicate vinyl (cool touch), it comes in little more than a flimsy paper sleeve, with liner note insert, and a "dust jacket" for the disc. While this is a rant for another time, I'm irritated with the death of the CD jewel case in favor of flimsy cardboard cases. For the subject release, it's just a paper sleeve without even a plastic disc tray that offers at least a little protection.This is a highly recommended disc. I don't buy many soundtracks, but The NeverEnding Story has not only a stellar theme song, but the film's score is a collection of individual themes that stand on their own, without the context of the film being necessary. The bonus tracks are welcome (if overkill for most listeners), and the entire package has been nicely remastered.
