Long Review - Worth the Investment
Feb. 15th 2019 PurchaseMay 15th 2019 ReviewOk so I’ve been waiting a while to review this product as I wanted to really test it out and see if it was not only worth the hype, but the money. Below are my lengthy comments.1. Living in Austin, TXAllergies are bad, like #26 worst city in the entire nation bad. Needless to say, we all suffer in this house. Between the dogs and just the location, we are on a first name basis with our ENT and have severe allergies that turn into sinus infections at least 6x a year. It’s that bad. Seriously. The ENT told me to move after my allergy test.2. The Unit ItselfThis thing is big, like very big. Roughly 3ft y’all and 2 feet wide and just a box body white (you can change the face cover) contraption. Is it pretty, no, does that matter if it works? To us, no, but just be aware that this is a little air purification unit you can just put in the corner and nobody will notice.3. Amount NeededMake sure you really buy the units based on your sq. footage. We ended up buying 4 units to place in the downstairs of our home alone so it does matter. I can’t speak on it we only had one if it would work, but the 4 are what we have strategically placed. Don’t forget to not butt them against the wall either. They need room to breathe and collect air.4. Simplicity of UseThese units are VERY easy to put together; all the lights are simple to understand and the instructions are straightforward. We have our 4 units running on high 24/7/365 and have not had one issue at all. The main light on the top indicates air quality; red =bad, yellow =OK, blue = good. It’s a great way to keep track of how the air quality is throughout the day.5. NoiseI wouldn’t say this is at all invasive when it comes to noise. Now, when we turn them off it seems very quiet in the house but when they are on and running there is not a noise you notice or that is bothersome. All in all they are incredibly quiet.6. UsesI want to preface that we bought our units for allergies, not air scent purification. We do have 5 dogs but I can’t say whether or not they helped with the “dog smell” - I would like to say our home doesn’t have a dog smell at all as they are all short coated dogs and we have a 3x a week housekeeper. I only say this as we bought these units to help with allergies and allergies only, not for smoking, bad smells etc so although our home always seems fresh and airy, I can’t speak to that here about the units.7. Do They Work?Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Wow - this is where I get excited. Since February until now, May when we all usually are at the ENT getting more meds and nose sprays we haven’t been once time this year. Now, does that mean we didn’t suffer from allergies? No, we still did, it has just been reduced measurably. We can breathe again, year round and living in Austin is truly much less miserable allergy wise. They aren’t cheap, and they may not be pretty to look at, but these units work, really well and we are so grateful for that because it sure beats the alternative of the doctor all the time. If you’re on the fence about them, pull the trigger. It’s worth it.

So glad I went with this model!
I will start by saying this air purifier made such a difference in my asthma/ allergies that I purchased a second unit 2 days after I bought the first.VOLUMEMy husband HATES white noise, so I was concerned about this being too loud. I check the decibel ratings on all new appliances because it makes such a difference to him. This does not bother him on auto during the daytime, and works for him in our bedroom at night if he set the unit to level 2 so it does not keep changing speeds.EFFECTIVEMy kids have even commented on how the air "smells cleaner". We aren't fighting odors, so I did purchased the base level HEPA filter model. However, we have a lot of dust and dander from our 2 big dogs and 3 cats. I actually never realized just how much until we started running this. I like how the unit clearly shows on top when there are more particulates in the air, and adjusts itself accordingly. We have a VERY open floorplan in the living room, kitchen, and great room, then our 2600 sq ft house is shaped like a U leading to the bedrooms and laundry. One 1100 sq ft unit was obviously not enough to do the entire house with all of our pets. Two units are making a substantial difference, though hardly ever on "blue" that shows fully clean, by having one on each side of the house. When I say substantial, I mean I am no longer having to take my allergy medicine every day and am not waking up having to blow my nose every morning. My allergies are to poor air quality, not specifically any one thing, and this has done the trick!QUALITYWow! I have to say that from just opening the packaging, you can tell this unit was made with quality in mind. I HATE assembling new products, and I am the person that reads ALL of the directions, much to my husband and son's amusement. This was so well packages, the directions were so simple and well-written, and it was the easiest to assemble product I have ever purchased. So much so, that I actually looked forward to putting together the second one when it arrived.SIZE/ APPEARANCEThis unit is much larger than I expected. I thought I would be able to put it in an unobtrusive spot by our fireplace, but it is much too large for that. That being said, the white has a sleek appearance and the effectiveness of the unit is worth the space it takes up.WEIGHTThe design is nice and simple and the unit was light enough (about 15 pounds) that I could easily carry it to and from my bedroom each morning and night. The bulky size made it awkward, but not undoable had one unit been enough to keep up with my house full of pets.CONSPrice, price, price.... We invested over $1000 just pruchasing the 2 units and the filters are expensive to replace. In my household full of furry critters, filters will probably need to be replaced much more often than the manufacturer states. They are however, like everything else about this unit, of very high quality and quite thick. Pricing for the replacement filters appears to be $80-$110, but I haven't shopped around for them yet.RECOMMENDED?YES!!!! I actually will probably end up buying a third one because I am so happy with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone with sensitivity to air quality.

Pretty nice, kind of big but does just what we need it to!
We bought this out of necessity of my SO having issues with allergies. We have 3 dogs in the house and the dander and dust can build up within a day easily. Before purchasing, he was sneezing, coughing, stuffed up and just plain miserable. It arrived fast, was easy to get started and has pretty much alleviated his problems. I give it 5 stars, as it functions just as described and has made him feel so much better. The only downfall is that it is big and can be a little loud. It takes up quite a bit of space compared to other purifiers I have had, which have all been towers. I must say that's not a fair comparison, as this is not and was not advertised as a "space saving tower". Just keep in mind that you'll need a place for this that is at least a foot out from a wall and almost 2 feet in width. It obviously must have breathing room as well to grab air - the fresh air is blown out of the top. The noise isn't horrible and it's just a blowing sound, not any obnoxious mechanical sound, but we do have to turn up the TV a few notches when watching a movie. The light on the top is cool, as it shows the level of cleanliness of the air. You can see it change to orange or red when the dogs come in the room. You can hear it kick in and know it's going to take care of you. :) Overall a great product, will make you feel a lot better!

Unit made noise after eight months of use
We ordered the Alen BreathSmart large unit with Hepa Pure filter since April 2020. Recently, it has been making a humming noise that is very hard to deal with as it used to be extremely quite on first speed and now it makes this noise that is unbearable. We wrote to the company and learned that they don’t service in Canada. We purchased the item on Amazon.ca $1,301.98 as well as two other filter next size down and those two smaller ones are working fine but the large one seems to be defective.

DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM!!
After a lot of research - I was excited for this item to arrive. I unpacked it, set it up and plugged it in. I was immediately disappointed. THE SMELL OF CHEMICALS WAS HORRIBLE AND WOULD NOT GO AWAY. It gave both my wife and I a terrible headache. Thinking it might be temporary I put the unit in a spare room in the basement and let it run. The smell did not go away. I determined the issue was likely with the filter. I had read about this problem so called Alen. I FOUND OUT ALEN DOES NOT SUPPORT UNITS SOLD IN CANADA. As always Amazon was helpful. Although they would not replace just the filter only the entire unit which they sent over right away. BUT THE REPLACEMENT HAD THE SAME CHEMICAL SMELL. I even ordered a separate filter - which was not as bad but still smelt like burnt plastic and chemicals. BOTTOM LINE IS ALEN IS USING SOME PRETTY NASTY SMELLING, HEADACHE INDUCING CHEMICALS IN THEIR FILTERS AND THEIR SUPPORT TO CANADIAN CUSTOMERS IS NON EXISTENT.
