How Dogs Think: What the World Looks Like to Them and Why They Act the Way They Do

a boring read............
I didn't expect that this book would be so technical, and so removed from a warm and fuzzy feeling about our canine pets.

Another excellent book by Coren!
I have read every book on dogs that Stanley Coren has written, and they are all quite obviously the work of a thorough scholar, a dog-lover through and through, a fascinating story-teller who will have you alternately laughing and crying, and a warm, wise human being.Coren's books are beautifully written (even if not always fastidiously edited), intended both to satisfy scholars and be fully accessible to a general audience, and absolutely fascinating. If you love dogs and hope to better understand them, and if you enjoy a good read, then buy this man's books. You will not regret it!

Focused, well thought out, informative book.
Focused, well thought out, informative book. Mr. Coren not only gives his thoughts and opinions, but delivers and backs this information with studies and the opinions of other respected professionals. He sights studies and cases for numerous instances throughout the book. The book is also well laid out so the reader can access the information they need. Read all or select as wanted.I was looking for a book to help some of my clients that are truly thinkers understand their dogs. Not train but understand in a human to canine connection. How does canine understanding and comprehension differ from that of humans. This book has excellent information on understanding the how’s and why’s. I believe it will benefit my analytical clients. It is difficult to teach humans with all their empathy and intelligence how to understand instinct. How to welcome that inborn sense of their dog, to refine and develop it.By the way, NO not a training book. It isn’t supposed to be.

Not a bad book
Not too bad... long in parts. I don't know if I learned too much new, but the author's examples were worth the lengthy read. However, my theory that dogs are faking stupidity was given a boost. Oh yes, our furry friends are very, very smart, ready to take over the world after humans all die off. That is, except the big dogs (over 50 pounds)... they are as dumb as a bag of hammers.

Love Stanley Coren's books
I have already read Stanley Coren's book "How to speak dog", which is not only a very helpful and informative book, but also highly entertaining. He writes very well, easily understandable, and he includes funny and interesting stories about his own dogs. I absolutely love dogs, and I have probably read about 20 books about dogs by now. Stanley Coren remains one of my favorite author of dog books. I highly recommend his books.I also love Patricia McConnell whose puppy book I bought when we got our 8-weeks old Australian Cattle Dog. This book helped us to raise him and become an amazing dog. He is social, well mannered, playful, and makes everyone smile...especially the children he works with as a therapy dog... Of course, I bought all of her books as well... :-)

Most Comprehensive Book I have found about dog behavior.
This is the second book by Stanley Coren that I have bought and read. The first book was "How to Speak Dog" which was a wonderful book on canine vocalizations, body language, etc. "How Dogs Think" is an excellent next step. The book almost has too much information about canine sensory perception and thought processes. It is an amazing look into the world of the canine which, unlike the human world which is interpreted largely through our eyes, is understood via exceptional scent and sound interpretating abilities. As such their brains work differently and respond to outside stimuli differently than humans. Fascinating book for those who are seriously interested in the subject matter. A serious book that provides real explanations to "How Dogs Think".

I am continually amazed at the writing of Stanley Coren
I am continually amazed at the writing of Stanley Coren. No matter how many of his books I read, he never really repeats himself. He may address similar problems but you always seem to be presented with another way of looking at it at so expanding your own thinking. This is an amazing look at & insight into 'How Dogs Think', literally. No one seems to give quite the same angles to ponder As this man. Read him & you will be amazed at how your perceptions, understanding of dogs is challenged & enhanced by this man.

Superlative!
I am a dog lover and some sort of dog educator, but also a neurologist and neurophysiologist. I do not tell this to boast myself, but so you can understand that I know something about neuro-anatomy and -physiology. Yet, I learned dog-things I didn't know and I live with dogs for 64 years now! When I say this book is superlative, I mean it. The author describes the dog senses with pinpoint precision, yet in such an easy understandable language even a non-scientist or a non-doctor can comprehend it. As usual with Coren, his way of writing is attractive and keeps you glued to the pages; his anecdotes are superb and very instructive. I find this book even more superior than his excellent book "Dog's intelligence". It is a 6 star book for everyone!

Brilliant book
Much of the content of this book is not easily available. Good style, well written and enjoyable. For anyone who wants to learn more about dogs and the research that has been carried out to try to establish how dogs work, think, use theri senses etc. Also lots of references to other animals and how they learn - including humans. Strongly recommended

Too Much Uninteresting Waffle and Statistical Analysis
Far too much reference to and research into other animals, too much theory, and not nearly enough content around how they see us, their decision making processes, with only occasional anecdotal stuff around this. Disappointed.
