Green Arrow (1988-1998) Vol. 1: Hunters Moon (Green Arrow- Graphic Novel)

This was ahead of it’s time.
Bold direction for Green Arrow at the time. Never read these as the were first published but did enjoy the long bow hunter mini series when it came out. There is something earnest about Oliver Queen as a character, his started as. gimmicky superhero in the 40’s, then a Batman copy with arrows, sidekick , cave , car and money. But then something happened. He became a bit of a hot headed loud mouth but with a strong passion for “right”. The came the team up with Green Lantern, his relationship with Black Carney his quitting the league, rejoining it. Then this. It’s amazing to see these changes in a character that last and get build off off if. I’m glad I finally came back and getting the chance to enjoy these fully. I also did enjoy the much later on series when 20 year spoiler ****!!!Oliver dies and Conner takes on the mantle, I know that never stayed and wasn’t super popular but I was loving it when it was coming out. To Kevin Smith now classic rebirth of Oliver. If your new to this era if Green Arrow and your like it , you have lots to look forward to. Some ups and downs but always with the come back. Much like the character it self with a habit of self destructiveness he tends to never give up a go away. Maybe that’s one of the things I find enduring about him.

Gritty!
I am a huge fan of Mike Grell’s gritty Green Arrow, but I was curious about the spotty presence of Black people within the pages until the final issue of this collection, where the story focuses on a Black gang expanding its geographic reach into Seattle and coercing into its membership a Black youth known to Oliver Queen. I did some research and found that at the time of the writing of this book (late 1980s), Seattle, the book’s setting, was indeed witnessing a surge in gang infiltration where Black youth were disproportionately targeted for membership, even though Blacks were only about 7% of the population. The storyline, which on the surface might have seemed racially insensitive, was actually addressing a timely topic.

A Great, Dark Green Arrow
I love this series of the Green Arrow. I'm biased, however, because I grew up in Seattle and have lived here all of my life so it is fun to see a comic hero living in Seattle and going to places in the city that I have also been to. As far as the story goes, it is nothing ground breaking, but if you like darker plots it is definitely for you. Some mature subject matter that might not be suitable for a younger audience. I love it though and find it to be more realistic. I love the Green Arrow's struggle with growing old in this series and seeing him deal with his humanity. Definitely worth picking up for fans of the Green Arrow.

Suggested For Mature Readers
This book comes right out of the gate firing on all cylinders. It's a crime noir thriller straight out of the Charles Bronson era. This is the gritty story comic book readers need, one that doesn't shy away from mature themes. You owe it to yourself to pick up Mike Grell's The Longbow Hunters and then this book and it's sequels.

Amazing content but Digital Version needs Update!!
The art and story are as good as I expected. Unfortunately the Kindle version needs some work. The double pages are scaled too small for my iPad Air and are hard to read even with the individual panel highlights. Rotating the device into landscape doesn't result in properly scaled up art - instead just a giant white border around a small art board. I use Marvel unlimited, and have used ComiXology' subscription service, and haven't encountered this issues with double page spreads with either service. It appears that DC is the only publisher out there that is short changing their digital content consumers.5 star content. 1-2 star presention. Buy the paperback unless the digital is deeply discounted and you understand what you're buying.

Required Reading for Green Arrow Fans
Great follow up to the Longbow Hunters. Oliver and Dinah's relationship and the gritty take on the idealistic character make for great reading.

A True Classic
What can honestly be said about Mike Grell's run on green arrow, about 25 years after these comics first appeared and they are still excellent, the simple idea with longbow hunters of stripping away the trick arrow, the fictional city (replacing star city with Seattle), the superpowers and the taking of Oliver Queen and Dinah Lance out of the rest of the DC continuity at that point and putting them in a more realistic and adult situation is continued here, even though this says volume one it really the second volume after the longbow hunters so some situations are referenced and explained to a degree so although it would help to have some knowledge of the previous events it isn't completely vital. The plot takes in three stories, hunters moon where Oliver comes up against newly released prisoner and suspected child killer Al Muncy, champions when Oliver is approached by a foreign government to recover a crashed piece of space debris it puts him up against mercenary Eddie Fyers and Gauntlet, when a increase in gang attacks in the gay community leads to deaths Oliver must investigate and put a stop to them. All three stories are told brilliantly and thankfully no attempt has been made to make the visuals look more modern, it pretty much is good old fashioned comic book art even the paper feels old fashioned not the more smooth modern paper, it really is an exercise in nostalgia and not in a bad way.So if you like well drawn, well plotted comics with a more serious look (and when I say serious I do not mean humourless, far from it) without the superhero trapping and camp, this is the comic for you, it really is top notch.Highly recommended for Green Arrow fans old and new, (in fact if you are a fan of Arrow this is very much something that has influenced that series) and even for non Green Arrow fans looking for a good read. (quick warning this was originally produced for DC mature line so it may have elements that are not suitable for young children.)

Historia interesante, me gusta el trabajo del colorista el los ultimos numeros hace que las páginas se vean más vivas, el comentario social ha envejecido un poco mal pero aprecio las buenas intenciones.
