Great book for exploring natural ways to treat depression
On the plus side, this is still one of the best run-downs of OTC supplements and their effectiveness on different types of depression (although some of it is outdated). He also has a good breakdown of what those types of depression are, which explains why something that works on one kind of neurotransmitter deficiency does nothing on another. On the negative side, while his skepticism toward pharmaceutical treatments is certainly well deserved, the book adopts a quasi-religious wholesale rejection of all of them. As someone who has treatment resistant depression I don’t think people should reject anything that could possibly help them escape from a dark place, and we simply don’t know enough about treating depression successfully to make sweeping proclaimations at this point in time. Still, I have given this book to a number of people who have tried everything and nothing seems to work. If you can accept the good parts and keep an open mind about the rest, it’s a very helpful book.

More medical than mental
I don't review books that I don't like. This one was a bit too medical for my taste (I discovered that I generally crave a psychological take on depression) but it is a book everyone who feels depressed, or ill, should have as a reference. As a result of reading the book I started taking vitamins every day and felt instantly much better. I noticed that I have been concentrating on depression so much from the "how-do-I-feel?" point of view that I have just about ignored all the physical things that affect the mood. While the book was a bit dry to read, it gets the job done. I feel that now I have a whole view on depression and I can address it from all the angles.

Made a huge difference in general and seasonal depression
I've recommended this book to many people already. I was on Prozac and wellbutrin and still feeling crummy. I got this book and after reading it went off the wellbutrin and started taking the amino acids and other supplements. Within about 3 more months I was completely off the Prozac as well. It's been almost a year and my depression, even during the awful winter, was really held at bay. I feel so much better taking these over the counter supplements than I ever did on Rx drugs.

Fantastiv knowledge!
This is a fantastic book for any human beeing who wants to feel happy in their life, but in particular people suffering from depression, and want to get of the pharmasuticals....You get to learn wich natural products to take for your own brain and body to produce the things you need to have a good and healthy mood.... It is hard to set a price on such knowledge!! Thang you Mr Cousins!!Love from a very happy Norwegian

Very technical & exactly what I needed to learn & understand what my body needs. Recommend to read several times to figure out correct treatment.

Lots of helpful dietary information
This book makes a good reference for the different uses of amino acids that can help depression. It also details the different types of depression so you can find your symptoms and individualize your treatment. The dietary information is sound. A well written how-to that will help a lot of people.

I am not finished with the book but, it is okay. I haven't tired using the 5 step plan due to still reading however, when I'm finished I will give it a whirl.

Not being a biochemist, I found this book inaccessible and dry, and would not recommend it as helpful reading for a depressed person.

The font size is far too small!!!
The Depression-Free for Life book arrived on time but the font size was far too small - about font size 9, this caused me to be detracted from reading it fully. Hence, I could only rate this book as 3 stars as O.K.!
