Preparation Workbook for the WISC-V

non-standard problems
I do not know how the book is made, and if it was done by illegal practices as the other reviews say, and I by no means would like to argue. The book says it is "Preparatory" and not giving away the actual testing. I would understand this statement as preparation of the kid to get used to non-standard problems, which also develops the brain. The fact that most schools do not administer those problems means that the test would put the kid in a very unusual situation and most probably stress her out. I would say, just like there are books with math problems or example testing, there should be books with IQ problems. Definitely it helps kids think in a different way.

Excellent Book. Helped my son a lot!
It’s clear to me that the negative reviews written about this book are coming from people who haven’t actually bought it and used it. As a parent, I want to prepare my children for every test they may encounter, especially if it’s a factor in whether or not they are accepted into an educational program. This book has helped my son become familiar with some of the so-called “novel tasks”, while developing other skills that aren’t so novel, e.g. arithmetic. He received the test score he needed for our school's program and we are both very happy with the results.

Great book; very thorough and helpful
I think it’s unfair for psychologists to write fake reviews just because they think the book shouldn’t even exist. I wanted to prepare my child for this test because she missed the cut-off score by only a few points. This book was very helpful in building her confidence and lowering her stress level. As long as schools use IQ tests for admissions, parents should be able to prepare for it. I’m very glad I bought it and encourage other parents to do so. By the way – it did not invalidate her test score.

Avoid this, you are harming your child by using this.
Incredibly harmful.Despite the narrative people like to push that IQ testing is meaningless, it isn’t. It correlates to real abilities children need to be successful in school, and there are mountains of evidence to support this. Preparing kids for IQ testing sets them up for catastrophic failure, as they will appear far more advanced than they actually are. This isn’t just some hurdle for your kid to clear in order to get where he/she belongs. Using a resource like this would be no different than lying to a school about your child having already taken Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Trigonometry to get them placed in Calculus when they haven’t taken those courses. Cheating to get your kid into a high ability program that they don’t belong in WILL NOT HELP THEM. They will not be successful, and now on top of having wasted their time and your money, you are exponentially increasing the likelihood that they will be left with a hatred of school/learning and other social/emotional problems that go hand-in-hand with the repeated failure they are sure to experience. If those factors are not enough for you to reconsider purchasing this book, consider this: you are likely wasting your money. On top of the $350 you will have to spend on this book, gifted/admission evaluations are not covered by insurance, you will have to pay out of pocket for them, and that can run in the range of several hundred dollars, sometimes more. Maybe that just seems like the cost of doing business to you, but psychologists know these measures, they know how rare truly gifted children are, and it is NOT difficult to pick out a child who has been coached/prepared compared to a child who is actually gifted. At that point, the test will be discontinued, and whatever information has been collected to that point will be declared invalid. Scores will not be reported. The clinician will then switch to a different IQ measure that your child has NOT prepared for, those scores will be the ones reported, and you will still be billed for the time wasted on the invalid WISC. And that's only if the clinician you're seeing has a test to switch to. Psychological tests are very expensive, and it's not impossible that that invalid WISC will be the only instrument that the clinician has, so you might end up paying purely for the clinician's time with nothing to show for it.So please, for the sake of your own wallet and your child's mental health, really think about whether you want to purchase this item. $350 up front just for the book. Greater than 90% odds that it will be a completely wasted $350 when the clinician identifies that your child has been using prep materials. And then you'll either be paying for the clinician's time up to that point and getting absolutely nothing in return, or you'll be paying even more to get the results of a different test that you didn't purchase prep materials for. AND THEN, even if you somehow defy the odds, pass off your prepped child as not-prepped, and get those invalid results presented as valid, you'll be using them to place your child in an environment where they don't belong, making them absolutely miserable. And if you think your child truly does belong there, great. Then skip this garbage and get the testing done legitimately. If they can handle it, you don't need the book. If they can't handle it, you're not helping them by circumventing the process and sneaking them in.

STOP! Check your parenting priorities!
There is no way to “prep” for an IQ test without causing inaccurate results! If you want to artificially inflate your child’s score so they can be placed in an academic setting that they are not equipped for, I invite you to re-examine your priorities. The vast majority of kids are not “gifted” and that should be okay with us. Would you rather have your child suffer psychologically as they are unable to keep up in the gifted program they shouldn’t have been placed in, so you can tell your friends he is “gifted”? This is what happens. I am a child psychologist and I see first hand the suffering a kid goes through when pressured by parents who need to think their kid is gifted. Do not deluded yourself that you’re “advocating” for your child by cheating on an IQ test. Please please love and accept the kid you have without trying to squish them into a different mold.

Unethical and Invalidating
This is an extremely harmful book and should be removed from amazon completely. Parents, you are doing your child a disservice if you try to "practice" for an IQ test by pre-exposing them to examples, such as this book. The intelligence tests are designed and researched to be effective and appropriate without a child having "practiced" for it. If you feel the need to coach your child to receive a better/higher score, your child likely would not qualify for gifted on their own in the first place. You are setting your child up for disappointment and frustration in school, as well as setting unrealistic expectations. There is nothing wrong with having an "average" IQ and not being placed in gifted. Instead of trying to "better" your child for your own person reasons and gain, accept your child for who they are and for the intelligence they have.If i could give 0 stars I would. Amazon should remove this book, as well as similar books, due to the harmful nature they present.

Book is used and ruined
It doesn’t say it in the description but this book is very used. Answers have all been circled, exercises are all done, and pages are ripped. Not much value in a test prep book that has been defaced in this way. I would pay $20 for this but not $250!

First of all it is a very expensive book! 14 pages are missing in the book, complete section is missing.Missing print in other available pages as well. Overall got a defective book that does not serve the purpose fully. Very expensive and yet arrived defective! Don't have enough time to return and reorder this book before the test! Not happy with the purchase!

Good background primer
This is a great way for us to understand what goes on in the testing session. I don't think it needs to be a surprise -- obviously the questions will be different in the actual test.It was very helpful for our child to be prepared for the test, which used all components of this book. Our child passed the necessary hurdle and I believe that the book was an integral part of providing some comfort through the process!
