Q: Which stain should be used? Cetol is not working.

I applied a good quality latex paint after shaping and sanding snd after around 6 months, it is holding up nicely. You could attempt to reach out to the manufacturer to ask if they have a method for applying stain.

Q: Has anyone tried adding acetone to the mix to reduce the viscosity? What was the result?

Never used a solvent. Found best results when mixed in your hands. Wear gloves. The warmth of your hands softens the putty.

Q: Can this be applied in 40 degree weather?

I have used it in the 50F range just fine, but not the 40s. It should be OK, especially if you mix it indoors at room temp and warm it in your gloves hands first.
