Written by a well-known authority on instrumentation, this is really one of the most useful guides to electronics, in general, (and instrumentation in particular) that I have ever seen. Most other books on instrumentation are either all theoretical with a smattering of "experiences", or all hands on with little theoretical structure. Fowler's book combines the wisdom of an accomplished and richly experienced lab technician with the mathematical rigor of many undergraduate texts.The chapters on software, systems engineering, documentation, human factors, and engineering judgment further distinguish it from any hobbyist's guide and most undergraduate type texts. These chapters further enable this book as a practical guide for engineers, engineering managers, lab technicians and managers of labs.This book will appeal to students and practicing engineers who have theoretical understanding but little experience in the lab; and to hobbyists who want to have a deeper understanding of electronic instrumentation. Two thumbs up for this one.

Ho acquistato il libro in oggetto principalmente basandomi su alcune recensioni web, e non ne sono affatto pentito. Scritto da un ingegnere biomedico professionista della progettazione, il libro esplora tutte gli aspetti della progettazione, dal concepimento dello strumento come un sistema di componenti e interazioni con il mondo esterno, alla documentazione tecnica e non, al disegno del circuito, alla definizione del layout di scheda e risoluzione di problemi EMC per giungere alla sua produzione. Sono riportati molti casi di studio e, nonostante alcune delle soluzioni tecnologiche discusse sono ora semi-obsolete, il metodo descritto per affrontare i diversi problemi di progetto rimane sostanzialmente valido anche ora, a venti anni dalla pubblicazione. È opportuno sottolineare che lo stile di esposizione dell'autore è piano, ordinato e chiaro come del resto è necessario se si vuole trattare una grande quantità di temi come avviene in questo libro.

Il libro sintetizza un completo ciclo di vita per lo sviluppo di un generico sistema elettronico. Ho trovato interessanti soprattutto i primi capitoli, con enfasi sulla necessità di progettare l'architettura e prevedere una buona documentazione. I capitoli più tecnici come quello sulla alimentazione sono necessariamente molto sintetici. Purtroppo molti dei riferimenti citati per approfondire gli argomenti sono introvabili per cui non ne consiglio l'acquisto se non come volume usato.
