Masterful storytelling - a profile in courage and faith
Max is a masterful storyteller. II felt as if I was there as he described in painful and painstaking detail the emotional, psychological, physical and spritual tortures he endured. His unswerving commitment to his God and to sharing his unbelievable experiences so that no one, no one can ever forget the inhumanity with which millions of people were treated. I had read his wife Simone's book as a young girl and her words have stuck with me to this day. I know feel am immense privilege to be acquainted with the words of her beloved departed husband.

Great book!
Very revealing. I must read for anyone who wants to understand the trials of living under the Nazi regime but how it was done with success and courage.

When The Spirituality of a Nation Becomes Nationalism
Growing up shortly after the end of WW2 one kept hearing the refrain "never again" and "never forget". Yet current events exceed the violence and depravity of the Nazi regime. Reading this narrative will give a person insight at to why the current silent majority provides the perfect environment for human suffering around the globe. Max was a Jew targeted by the Nazis because of his race, however, as he was absorbed into the concentration camp infrastructure he came into contact with a group of people who refused to bend to the Nazi will or be intimidated by threat of death. Jehovah's Witnesses refused to participate in the violence or use of military force - 250 were executed by the Nazis for refusal to join the military. As a Jew, Max was familiar with the Holy Writings and his observation of the Witnesses in the concentration camp convinced him that he had finally found true faith on the earth. Instead of hatred and revenge for his concentration camp experience, his reaction and life course exhibited faith in the example set by the Messiah he had learned about in his youth. His experiences and subsequent marriage to another famous concentration camp survivor makes this a wonderful and exciting narrative.

Great 1st Person Experience
Max does a great job of explaining the day-to-day realities of life under Right Wing extremism. Never forget how we affect others

Good Read
Fascinating real life story. Very well written. Atrocitiescommitted by extremely cruel Nazis against Jewish and Jehovah’s Witnesses. Such vile and inhumane treatment. Would recommend to anyone who thinks injustices of today are bad. Read this book to really see what injustice and racism is all about! This was a most faith strengthening book! It really shows how Jehovah’s Witnesses were kind not only to their own, but to others as well. They stood their ground when told to do something against theirBible-based conscience and therefore brought praise and honor to their God Jehovah, even when they knew it could cost them their lives. That is loyalty like none other!

Very moving and emotional account of one man’s devotion to God
I was just so drawn to this book from cover to cover, that before I knew it, I finished the book in one sitting. I started to highlight important points of how Jehovah’s Witnesses, who were also suffering from the cruelties of being held prisoners in Nazi camp, still found opportunities to use the Bible’s message of hope to Witness to others. Their courage and faith in Almighty God’s life saving power, gave hope and courage to other prisoners, like Max. What a wonderful example these Witnesses have shown to show love to their neighbor, despite being of different religious backgrounds.

Eyewitness Account of Holocaust
It's important that these accounts are recorded since some disbelieve the actual events of history. How can it be denied when those who have endured record their personal experiences for posterity? Max's account of the treatment of Jews versus Jehovah's Witnesses in the concentration camps was invaluable. His escape from the grips of death with the help of others in the camps was an inspiring triumph of the decency of the human spirit in the face of the severest form of adversity. Quick and easy read of a moving account, well worth your time.

Can’t stop thinking about this book
I just can’t stop thinking about this story. It instills courage and endurance. If Max could endure soooo many terrible trials it really puts into perspective my own trials and gives the me endurance to keep going forward. A must read.

Thank you
Because I am interested in the purple triangle badge. And this helped me to be thankful for all those that lost their life and those who survived. without their courage many of us would not be here. They stayed strong for me
