Kindling
Mounted it out back and it works great. Be sure to use smaller pieces but you can easily split them into kindling for starting fires. Definitely takes some force but you can just think of it as a good workout lol

great addition to the fire pit
I really love the design of this splitter. I've never seen anything like it before. I'm always very careful to watch my fingers when splitting up logs for kindling but accidents can happen and with this your hands are kept well out of reach of the blade. So much safer! You will want to use pretty dry wood and avoid pieces with knots but since its for making kindling you shouldn't really be trying to split anything wet or knotted up anyway. I do wish the handle was a bit longer. I have wanted a little more leverage a few times but overall I'm very pleased with it.

Don't buy it if you have hard wood that you heat with
It definitely will not split hardwood and that's what we burn up here in Maine

kind of disappointing
I have always wanted one of these and had high hopes for it, I've watched a lot of videos on these before and there are some great designs out there and some horrible ones, this one I would say is in the "lower middle" in terms of not being that great of a design. The main annoyance with it is that it is not sized/shaped correctly to properly handle anything bigger than about a 6" long straight grained softwood board about 3/4" thick. There is a note in the package that says "use wood under 16"" and you definitely won't be able to use it on anything over 12" and anything over about 8" will probably really annoy you.The point of this is to make kindling simple, and if you want that you're going to be using 4-6" long boards, and it doesn't have the leverage to do a 2x4 unless it is a very straight grained piece. Also, the blade closes very close to a few of the teeth, so much so that I don't want my kids to use it, and I had hoped it would be a safe/fun way for them to split kindling. Because the kindling will split or not (by the cutting wedge size/shape) long before the blade is fully closed, this ability of the blade to cut or badly pinch a finger by almost contacting the teeth is totally unnecessary. If they gave it a 1.5" standoff it would cost nothing in functionality and make it almost impossible for a kid to get hurt with. The safety ring is a simple and nice touch. If you can find a longer/bigger model that will handle 12-16" and avoids the cut risk I mentioned I would go with that. Gave it three stars since it does work well on smaller stuff, and is cast steel instead of cast iron. Mounting holes are in smart locations and would fit on a 4x4 post (or just barely on two 2x4s if you angle the included lags).

Helpful tool for small, softer pieces with a heavy duty construction that’s simple to mount and use.
The media could not be loaded. The Kindling Splitter by Voltstorm, is a very helpful tool for kindling only. With its strong construction, easy mounting and use, this is a worthy consideration. Here are some of the things I’ve learned while owning it and things to consider before buying.I. Quality – This is well-made out of all steel. It looks and feels very durable and should last me for years.II. Performance – It’s important to understand that this is only designed for small, softer woods and only really to make kindling. I use it in conjunction with other tools to get the wood down small enough to make this useful. If you start with the correct wood that’s small enough in size, it handles it well, making it easy to split it into smaller kindling type pieces.Overall, as long as you understand its limited purpose, this can be a great tool to help in fire fuel preparation. I’m very happy with it and look forward to using it for years to come. I’ll be sure to update this review, if I ever start to have problems with it.If you’d find it helpful to see a visual inspection of this product, I recommend you watch my included video in full screen or landscape. They say a picture is worth a 1000 words, well it’s a video! You can trust that this review is simply my honest opinion that is attempting to provide you with helpful insight that I wish I had before I picked this product. Hopefully it was helpful in your decision.

Doesn’t hold true to expectations, more hassle than a help
This splitter serves its purpose I suppose , and in turn should provide a convenient solution for splitting smaller ore cut soft pieces. The pros, its portable and seems to have a heavy-duty construction which is commendable, making it suitable for outdoor use. However, the performance could be more consistent, as we've encountered occasional issues with splitting larger pieces that it claims to be able to handle.I was rather disappointed in how it handles, it ended up being more of a pain and not worth the kindling since it seemed to only work well with small soft wood pieces under 12” . I’d prefer the hatchet method . Overall, it's an ok option as long as you know what you are getting out of it with the end result of small kindling pieces.

Definitely soft wood only
I thought this was gonna be something I'd use frequently but it ends up being easier to just use my hatchet or larger blade and a stick to hammer it down. The splitter works ok but you'll have to puts with it depending on the wood. If you have a perfect soft wood it works well to get some nice kindling. The splitter itself is definitely sturdy and well hold up for a lot of years if not left directly out in the weather. The blade is sort of sharp but could definitely use a good grind to get a really good edge on it. The steps work fairly well for tougher pieces that you'll need the additional leverage for.Overall I personally think it's a little gimmicky but it does work for the most part.
