Gesso Coating Not Even
I ordered this set of 24 GOTIDEAL 8x10 Canvas Boards to print cyanotypes on.I create cyanotypes on a large variety of surfaces. One of my favorite surfaces to use is canvas. I've used canvas boards in the past. Some have worked very well, others have not worked at all. There are several issues when using any material for cyanotype prints. First, the surface has to accept the water-based cyanotype emulsion. Some surfaces are too porous and the chemicals soak in so deep that they cannot be washed out. Other surfaces have insufficient "tooth" and the emulsion will not adhere or will break into drops. Finally, the media you are using needs to withstand repeated washing in water without falling apart or losing structural integrity. The cyanotype emulsion appears to go on smoothly with these boards. It does not penetrate too deeply into the surface. The boards go through the wash process well without coming loose from their backer board. They do curl a bit as they dry, but not so much to be a problem. What I noticed, though, is that there seemed to be some mottling in my prints on these canvas boards. That is often caused when the coating of emulsion is not smooth. I suspect that the gesso applied to these canvas boards is heavier in some areas than others, leading to variable absorption of the emulsion.I don't think that the apparent unevenness of the gesso would be an issue if these boards were being used for painting.

Great flat canvases for family art night
These canvas boards work well for casual use. I intentionally tried them with super cheap watercolor and tempera, neither of which get on famously well with canvas, and they were totally fine. The tree painting is watercolor and the cat is tempera. I feel that the watercolor would have gone better with (1) a better (or at least more experienced) artist, and (2) a gesso more specific to watercolor.I like that every other canvas in the pack is plastic wrapped. It prevents chafing without making too much waste plastic. I am not a serious artist, but at less than $1 each they really elevate family art night without breaking the bank.

Excellent deal.
As a former art student, these cheap multi-packs would have been a godsend. These are perfect for practice or for project days (Sip and Paint, anyone?).Now, to put my art knowledge to some use to help you out:-Canvas boards are neither superior or inferior to stretched canvas. It’s all a matter of preference. At this point in my artistic experience, I prefer these canvas boards as they don’t need to be stretched and are easy to find a frame for hanging.-Gesso primed. Music to my ears! Paint (particularly oils) tend to eat away at natural fibers over time, and priming prevents that. This is already done for you. Acrylic is perfectly fine as a base for both oils and acrylic paint.Hope that helps, and good luck with all the beautiful art you’re going to make on the cheap ;)

Good Quality, Affordable, Works for Watercolor and Gauche
These canvas boards are a nice size for beginning painting. I am using them for watercolor and gauche which are new media for me. I like that these boards are inexpensive enough that if one of them doesn't turn out great, I didn't waste a lot of money on a larger more expensive canvas. They are primed and have a medium grain that does show texture but not too much for watercolor. I am looking forward to doing some more small scale practice on these boards. These would also be great for a group art class. Highly recommended.
