Incredible Movie on many scores...
Incredible movie. The acting was good, not Oscar material, but not average either, and better than most pure action movies. The sceneries were breathtaking, incredible. The directing fantastic. There was understated humor and fast fast action that left one almost breathless. At first I had reservations about Angelina being Lara Croft, but after watching the DVD, all reservations went out the window. She was born to play this role. Angelina did her own stunts, thank you very much, which adds more to the film (no having to pull back shots with a double).Yes, Angelina did an accent, it wasn't a heavy one, or a stereotypical one where you could say "it's welsh for sure" or "it's Scottish for sure".. but you know, I know in reality many people in this melting pot world where their accents are not very clear as to what accent it is they have. That's reality. She did a great job with it and made it seem more real to me (than some heavy-handed accent, or some too perfect accent, or some stereotypical accent). I could understand every word she spoke. And maybe the one reviewer was too focused on Angelina's great body and so didn't noticed that there really was a plot. Not a deep, filled with twists and undercurrents and many subtexts plot, but a good plot, one that actually did have some subtexts and some thought-provoking aspects to it, if one was willing to look for it. The movie has, then, layers to it, like a good archaeological dig :-). Having said that, yes, the plot wasn't a 5* plot, but sheesh, do they all need to be? Diversity is great, and sometimes a decent average plot with some INCREDIBLE action and scenery (and not just Angelina scenery) is a very good thing. One does not live off of Shakespeare alone. For those who say the camera was too much on Angelia (as if that could be possible <grin>) were either not watching the movie I was watching, or that they were so captivated by her that they didn't notice the incredible landscapes and panoramas that were presented to them. That's not the fault of the movie that some viewers are feeling guilty for gawking at Angelina so much that they couldn't tell you what the movie was about or that there were some fabulous direction going on with the photography. Is it wrong to have a beautifully photographed movie have a beautifully photographed star? Not in my book. This movie is a must see, must have, must buy.

Perfectly Average
This may just be the most middle of the road movie I've ever seen. This movie is based off of the recent reboot of the Tomb Raider games, however it takes liberties with the source material. Early in this film the changes make the plot less compelling, however the film eventually becomes more like that of the games and in those moments you can see Vikander really shine as a live action Lara Croft. Her performance is convincing and she shines during the action scenes. Unfortunately these positives arrive too late and coupled with a less than great ending it fails to rise above just average. I also watched this with my girlfriend who is a big fan of the recent games and she personally disliked some of the changes in the story of this movie as they undermined important elements of the plot or ruined some of the more fantastical elements that the game had. I guess we're still waiting on the first great video game movie adaptation.

Excelente.

Tomb Raider 4K Blu Ray Review - "Time to save the universe again!"
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is one of the better videogame adaptations, and is always fun to go back to. From the impressive stunts actually performed by Angelina Jolie, to the stunning locations of Cambodia, to Iain Glen chewing the scenery with glee. It's one slick, well-paced adventure that really does carry through the core idea of Tomb Raider being a mashup of James Bond and Indiana Jones. Now available in ultra high-def 4K, I was interested to see how well the visuals would hold up. As with any effects movie, some parts look better than others, but I was quite impressed at the sheer level of detail and overally quality to be found. From start to finish the film has a good coat of grain present, it spikes in certain moments but is usually unobtrusive, and is pretty much consistent through regular moments and fx shots. There's rarely any disconnect between the two, no dip in quality at all when going from effects to a normal shot. A good few effects-heavy scenes actually look a lot better with the benefits of 4K resolution and the enhanced colour depth. The HDR felt fairly restrained here, but certain key parts do see it spring into action. Powell's opulent offices are an early showcase, and the jungle looks appropriately vivid, but it's the distorted effects of the triangle of light that take the cake- with some strikingly bold colours as time is "broken".The standout scene of the whole movie is still delving into the temples of Cambodia. The location shots outside are beautiful, but once the film takes you inside the tomb it's truly epic. You can really appreciate all the incredible effort put into these sets, and the lighting has a nice bit of extra contrast compared to the older blu ray. When the action kicks off I couldn't help grinning, watching the stone monkeys get shot to pieces, a giant gold statue swinging swords around, Lara riding a giant swinging pendulum, it all looks incredible.Sounds great, too. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider now comes with full uncompressed DTS-HD Master Audio, instead of the weirdly limited track that was on older releases. It's seriously a blast, with the film hovering between 10 and 11 on the loudness scale for a lot of its runtime. Everything has a good deal more punch, with it only occassionally getting too much. The pounding soundtrack was a treat to listen to, and I pumped my fist when Elevation kicked in on the credits. Just all round a great listen! The 4K disc includes the original director's commentary and no other features aside from scene selection, with just one fairly no-frills still menu. Amusingly, the old blu ray release is bundled alongside. The UHD version completely blows away the old blu ray, but if you're after the making-of material it's nice that they included it. Just a little dissapointing since all of that is in standard definition and you'd think there'd be room on the first disc. 4K movies on blu must take up a whole lot of space if they can't fit any of that stuff on.To sum up, there's no better way to enjoy this movie. It's a damn good re-release by Paramout that, while lacking new extras, delivers the goods with wonderful picture and sound quality. Between this and The Mummy (1999) coming out on UHD as their reboots flounder, it really does show they don't make 'em like they used to.
