Constantly engaging, and anyone interested in British art of the first half of the twentieth century will find much in this book that is enlightening. Schwabe emerges as an entirely sympathetic figure. If he was ultimately more significant as a teacher than as an artist, his exceptionally pleasant character (for an artist) makes this a very enjoyable read.
