A Bone in His Teeth

READ. THIS. BOOK.
My last review glitched because I wrote so much. BUT THERES SO MUCH TO SAY! i LOVE this. So much. Folklore, actually scary feral mer-folk with teeth and claws and real threat to life, a main character who fights tooth and nail for the best character arc of growth I have read in a long, long time, smut that is not only well written but unbelievably hot (two!! TWO OF THEM! iykyk) revenge, grief, magic, superstition, queer trans and disability rep... I am squealing giggling and kicking my legs because this is going to stay with me for so so long I just know its going to be one of those I read again and again. This book is steeped in horror, both supernatural and human caused, blood soaked, salt encrusted, and will latch onto you and drag you into the depths and you'll love every bloody second of it.

Sooooo good
So heartwrenching, so creepy and horrific in parts, some sweetness, and some serious spice, I couldn't stop devouring this book.I think I may be stuck with a serious book hangover after this one. Best book I have read in a while.

Fantastic book
Kellen Graves writing continues to be steeped in atmospheric wonder and, in A Bone in his Teeth, that writing brings the bleak coastal setting to life. The ominous undertone written into every aspect of this world is perfect, from an abandoned lighthouse left rotting on the shore to missing selkies, a missing parent to a town that seems to know more than it should. Kellen breathes this world to life and it feels like you’re stood by the sea, breathing in the saltish brine of the coast. It’s not a Kellen Graves book, however, without amazing character work.Alba and Eridanys, a human lighthouse keeper and a merrow, are the shining heart of this book. While Alba searches for his mother and Eridanys searches for the merrow that lived in Moon Harbour, their lives intertwine. These characters don’t start off on the right foot, untrusting and uncertain of each other, they discover that working together could help them find the people they’re both looking for.Alba and Eridanys are both a little stubborn, both a little lonely and both violently protective of the people they love. I don’t think I will ever not love every character written by Kellen Graves, and this book has cemented them as one of my favourite authors. If you’re looking for a fantasy romance horror book, then this could be perfect for you.

Absolutely amazing story
I loved this book, absolutely amazing, totally unique story, great characters and world building, once I started reading I had to force myself to put it down to deal with that irritating life stuff that keeps intruding. My first book by this author, am going to read more now.

My favourite book this year
I can't get enough of Kellen Graves' writing. Their ability to weave intricate stories into fascinating worlds leaves me despairing every time I realise I've run out of books to read by them. This new story is no exception. The combination of seaside folk horror and romance is genius, and quite unique for the genre/s in my opinion. It was so atmospheric and gripping I couldn't help but imagine it as a film reeling through as I read it. I'd highly recommend for anyone who enjoys horror, mystery, fantasy, smalltown creepiness and/or love stories - take your pick.Side note, the cover art for this and all of their other books (I believe done by their partner?) is absolutely gorgeous and deserves a special mention!

Swept Away...
I've never read anything quite like this book. I was enthralled, fascinated, surprised, horrified and completely captivated by such an original story and intriguing characters. The writing is absolutely beautiful. The story unfolds with pacing and clues that just wouldn't let me stop reading. Seeing the lead characters evolve and grow into each other made my heart ache.I was truly swept away...

Absolutely perfect
I adored this, it was dark, entertaining, and very well written. I'm an absolute sucker for anything siren or mermaid based and this was done sooooo well. The characters relationship developed really beautifuly and I legit choked up at the part with Alba's mom. I dont usually tear up but heck the scene *Hit*. 10/10 absolutely reccomend this one!! (Also the smut was niiiiiice.. thank yew)

Exciting gloomy seaside novel
A Bone in His Teeth completely mesmerized me. The worldbuilding is so vivid and dark, you can almost feel the wind and rain on your skin, hear the sound of the pipes and waves all around you. Both main characters have their flaws, which makes them feel entirely real and relatable. I'm a fan of "Touch him and you die", and ABIHT made good use of this trope. The execution and reveal of all the hidden secrets, and how they intertwined all along, were wonderfully done and didn't allow for me to stop reading, as I needed to find out more.I wish we could read more about Alba and Eridanys, see how their relationship evolves more.

Best 2024 Read
It has been a long, long time since I have read a book that has emotionally impacted me as much as this story has. I only recently got back into reading, my enjoyment of it having had been stamped out while I was in high school while I was too busy with band and AP classes to have the time to read for pleasure any longer like I used to when I was a kid, and I didn’t get back into it after high school for a number of years.Accepting a position at my local library 3 years ago (where I work joyously and with great love and appreciation for my career) rekindled my love for books and my appreciation for the hard work, art, and dedication that is put into their creation.A “Bone in His Teeth” by Kellen Graves was one of the most enjoyable, emotionally invested reads I have had in literal years, alongside their “Rowan Blood” series (which I am frothing at the mouth over). The story is heightened in its beauty by the most gorgeous cover art EVER by @morlevart, capturing the essence of the book in an absolute vision.Don’t mind me as I sit here with my Rosé and cry over such a beautiful read while I take a few days to emotionally recover.
