Organic Zante Currants, 5lbs

I divvy these up into freezer baggies each containing 2 cups, which is what I need to make two loaves of Irish Soda bread with caraway seeds. Currants freeze beautifully and, frozen, they last a year, so 5 pounds is not the big gulp one might imagine. Currants make a great bite in scones, too-- and almost any other kind of bread. They're also a wonderfully, not too sweet addition to pastries, for example: Banbury Tarts, and mincemeat pies. Folk who dislike raisins might give these a try; they have a less sugary, almost wine-like flavor that suits the adult palette. That said, it's my kids who've always craved soda bread with currants!

These are moist, plum and nothing like those shriveled things you get in many grocery stores. They are better than some of the raisins you get too, and this includes organic raisins. I use a lot of currants and raisins in baking, and these are amazing! I just ordered more and will vacuum pack them into smaller units.

I have no doubt of the high quality of Organic Zante Currants, but I will never, ever buy them again: Amazon.com is wasting space and presenting a troublesome distraction by keeping and presenting a record of my order. Fresh fruits in season are far, far preferable, for flavors and health benefits, to dried fruits, which unlike the fresh, cause me distressing digestive difficulties.

I use these currants every day in a bowl of steel cut oatmeal. They are dry enough to not be sticky and gooey like what I was finding in some stores, but are packed tightly in the container, so one needs to break them apart some in order to use them. The quality and flavor is good, and consistent, so I know what to expect, and these are organic.

Very flavorful and sweet.
