I picked up this natural gas leak detector as part of a project to set up my home with a quick disconnect on my gas meter for running a portable generator on natural gas. Ensuring there are no gas leaks is crucial. Typically, people use soap and water and rely on the odor of natural gas to detect leaks. Having a meter like this can be essential for accurate leak detection. You always want to work with a license professional on a project like this. However, it also good to have your own tools to validate the work was done properly.The device is straightforward to use. It goes into calibration mode for about 30 seconds. Once calibrated, it’s ready to detect any gas leaks. To test it, I simulated a release of natural gas to see if the detector would pick it up. I connected my generator and ran it for a bit, then disconnected the quick disconnect hose to allow gas to start releasing from the regulator. The detector picked this up immediately. There is a release valve on the backside of the regulator that releases natural gas from the enclosed system altogether. When I pressed this valve, the detector spiked to 100, accurately picking up the large flow of natural gas.The detector was able to detect both moderate to low levels of natural gas at the nozzle and extreme releases when the valve was opened. I'm very happy with its performance and feel it provides the necessary information for any natural gas work. I maintain all the gas lines in my home, as well as install and replace our gas appliances. This is a game changer for detecting leaks. I tested it with my gas stove and there is something important to note if you are trying to detect small leaks. The %LEL is not going to register unless there is significant air saturation, and even if it does it detect it will just be a percent or two. For tiny leaks make sure to switch the meter to PPM. This IMMEDIATELY detected even a tiny amount coming out of my burner (not lit obviously). The build quality is also top notch and this seems like a robust unit that should a very long time. If you need a gas detector get this. Highly recommended!

Claims 50-50000PPM detection range but I've only seen it be able to detect concentrations above 300PPM. With both natural gas and isopropyl alcohol I was able to smell the odorant/alcohol well before it registered on the detector. Similar with propane, brief squirts out of an unlit torch would only register if I pointed it right at the detector head. They state that the accuracy is only <±5%LEL, <±500PPM, so that does match with my unit needing a few hundred PPM before it is able to show a reading.Most useful in confined spaces to warn of dangerous buildup of combustible gases (%LEL being lower explosive limit, at 100% the atmosphere is combustible). I would stick with the soapy water for minor pipe leaks, especially in any area with airflow. This just won't be sensitive enough at that level of dispersion at the leak.Unit is fairly well built. The main body outweighs the detector head even fully straightened out, so it won't tip over by itself. The integrated rechargeable 18650 li-ion cell is appreciated so you're not messing with AA/AAA batteries. It has rubber over-molding on both sides for a secure grip. The buttons are a bit cheap being just membrane switches. Also be aware that while the unit seems fairly splash proof, there is a small section of vent holes on the back near the top where the specifications are listed.

On a few occasions I've smelled what I thought was a gas leak around my outdoor gas meter. But the odor quickly dissipates and I have no idea if it was a leak or not. I just had my furnace replaced and we tried out this meter during the process. It seems to have worked perfectly registering about 800 ppm of gas. So the next time I have a unknown gas smell, I'm ready to determine if it is a leak or not.

I tested it with a small butane torch and if it was close to the torch that was releasing gas, it detected it. The further away I got from the source, the less likely it was to detect. That just means if you are unsure what the source could be, walk around with the meter.It’s easy to carry, easy to charge and is rechargeable. It seems accurate up to the claims of detection, within the margin of error. I have not had any false positives since using it. It’s a great device and after several tests, I trust it to notify me when I’m unsure, if I should be worried or not.

This natural gas leak detector is very simple. The instruction manual is straight forward and easy to read. More importantly, the detector is straight forward and easy to use. I tested it on an unlit burner on my natural gas stove, and it works perfectly. The screen is bright and easy to read, the wand is adjustable, and the controls are uncomplicated. All gadgets should be this easy to use. What a good detector!
