Beautiful. I feel inadequate to the task of describing the book, but I will say that I force everyone who comes to my house to read or listen to at least one poem.

I am not a huge poetry-phile. I find I have to read collections in small doses. I can't flip through it quickly from front to end in one sitting. I don't think I "got" all of this material, but some passages really stuck with me and were beautiful!ODE TO BIG PUNI'm not a prayerI just wish a lot

Prepare to go deep and to be dazzled
Kevin Young’s poetry dazzles me. In this most recent collection, Young writes about how “brown,” whether as color or as last name, is weighted with meaning. John Brown. James Brown. Brown v. Board of Education. Some of the names who figure in Young’s verse. There are other, less famous names, whose lives were compressed by the weight of racism and oppression. Their early deaths demonstrate that racism, regardless of whether expressed in thought or deed, cannot be separated from violence.
