A tour-de-force
Bede and the Black Madonna is a remarkable memoir of one of the great mystics of our age. The author herself may also be one; her insights of the man who went to India to bring together two great spiritual traditions are deep and insightful. In 1992 Father Bede asked the author to continue his experience of the Black Madonna - an almost impossible ‘task’ as his own experience of the Black Madonna came via the medium of a stroke in 1990 which left him clinically dead for a week.It took the author thirty-two years to unfold her honouring of his task and we follow her, the author, from Australia, to India, through France and to England. We are the richer for that unfolding pilgrimage; a journey which includes entering and going beyond being a swami in a Yoga tradition and becoming and going beyond being a Catholic. The author honours both traditions as giving her the insights which form the basis of her discoveries.I recommend this captivating, simply and beautifully written, memoir. Reading it, I felt I was in the presence of a great story-teller, a wise woman who has gained that crisp quality of an Elder in whom any youthful foolishness has been honed to "crystal clarity". An amazing memoir, humorous, poignant, breathtaking and profound, it also reveals the dark and very unspiritual side of certain spiritual groups. The inspiring photos included bring a personal intimacy to the subject.

Following the mystery of the Mother
Lovely lovely. This is pure delight - following her breadcrumbs across continents and time with the mystic Bede Griffiths. All of it is interesting and insightful - the second half is devoted to fulfilling her promise to Bede to explore and discover dozens of Black Madonnas from Kali in India to the lady in Glastonbury and medicine men in Black Australia. .
