Very good biography of a forgotten giant of the late Victorian era
Joseph Chamberlain by PT Marsh is a very in-depth biography of the life of one of the most interesting men of late Victorian British politics. It covers his rise to become the first really influential middle class entrepreneurial MP and his subsequent impact. If you are looking for an introduction I would reccomend Radical Joe by Dennis Judd but if you want something more substantial this is the work to go for. It is well written but quite long but you get out what you put in. In many ways it is a fitting tribute to an influential men who dared to think differently about the role of the state in soceity, how to raise revenues and how to unify the Empire but allowed personal ambition and character flaws to split both the Liberal Party and the Conservative/Unionist Party. All in all a very good book which rewards the effort of reading such a large and in-depth work.
