A great intro!
This is a great introduction to the world of Warhammer (classic and 40,000). It explains a lot about the being that will (maybe ...) become the Emperor of mankind.

Chronicles the Life of a Legend (Spoiler Free Review)
This is an Omnibus that contains 3 books chronicling the life of Sigmar: Heldenhammer, Empire, and God King. And an additional short story entitled, Let the Great Axe Fall. All of the books are well written and getting 3 books for around $10 is a pretty great deal. If you like the Black Library Books or just want to learn more about Sigmar, you should pick it up.Story:The story begins with the Legendary Sigmar as a young adult warrior who serves under his father's rule. In the first book, you meet Sigmar's friends, his first love, and his father. You see how he becomes king of a village and follows his dream to unite the clans against their common foes. Uniting the clans was far more difficult than he imagined and getting each clan leader to cooperate was a trial of it's own. Throughout these trials, the Empire is under constant attack from Greenskins and Undead. It's an action packed, entertaining, and inspirational story about a man following his dream and becoming a legend.Characters:The characters are pretty one dimensional, but fun. There are many and after a short introduction, they get thrown into some action. It's easy to cheer for the good guys and hate the bad guys in these stories. But you probably won't find yourself relating to anyone besides Sigmar.World Building:The World of WARHAMMER is very well defined. The races, cities, cultures, enemies, and battle tactics all come to life in this series. Each clan has it's own personality, rules, leaders, and culture. It's also interesting to see the World of Men, before it was united into an Empire.Writing Style:This isn't great literature, but it is fun to read. The story moves fast and there's just enough gritty detail to define the characters, the setting, and the world, before you get thrown into an epic battle or deadly duel. Many of the descriptons are great and it's fun to put the WARHAMMER world together in your head.Action:The action is visceral and there is a lot of it. It seems like every other chapter has some mighty battle, duel, or great feat. You'll feel the impact of swords, the thunder of cavalry, and the crushing blows of hammers. The battles also have consequences as not all of the main characters survive them unscathed.Maturity: Older TeensThis is a Black Library Book, so there're loads of war and gore and some mild sexual / comical situations.Overall:You're getting 1000 pages of epic action for around $10. This is a great deal. If you are interested about how Sigmar became a legend, how the Empire was formed, or just like the massive battles that WARHAMMER has to offer, then you should pick this up.Buy it if you like comic book style heroes, epic battles, and dark fantasy.Avoid it if you're looking for literature / Jordanesque prose. If you liked this book, check out anything by David Gemmell, the Conan books by Robert E. Howard, or the other WARHAMMER Omnibuses starting with The Blackhearts or Malus Darkblade.

Starts slow - but aims high. Great Value
Like most Black Library books - The Legend of Sigmar isn't great literature, nor is it terrible. But it is a very fast read and an entertaining "popcorn" type book. The first few chapters are rather slowly paced and dull (involving Sigmar's life as a teen, and his first love). But once the book moves on to the founding of the Empire things really pick up. I think I prefered the more mythology-like "Life of Sigmar." They cover the same material - but in a completely different manner. You might differ, and I certainly still enjoyed the book.Overall, you get a thousand+ pages of reading for less than $20. You'd be hard-pressed IMO to be displeased with your purchase.
